The DRM-Free Revolution Continues with Big Pre-Orders and Launch Day Releases!

Good news! GOG.com is going to bring you more fantastic launch day releases, preorders, and other exciting new content from some of our favorite developers. We've lined up 3 big titles that we will be bringing to GOG.com in the next couple of months for sale or preorder that we think will be hits with all of our gamers; and we have more equally exciting games coming up soon.

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

That brings with it more good news, though! As mentioned, we have three games we're launching soon with regional pricing--two RPGs and a strategy game--and while we can't tell you what they are yet because breaking an NDA has more severe penalties than just getting a noogie, we're confident that you'll be as excited about these games as we are. For a limited time, we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2.

If you have any questions, hit us up in the comments below and we'll be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

EDIT: Since we've answered a lot of the common questions already here (and lest you think that we've ignored you), it may be handy for you to check out the forum thread about this and search for staff answers by clicking this link here. (hat tip to user Eli who reminded us that the feature even exists. :)

F4LL0UT: I thought all the games that GOG is referring to in this announcement come from independent studios - or at least from small publishers. And even if it's publishers - it's still where people actually have to put the blame. It's them who didn't agree to one international price and GOG has probably done everything they could to convince those guys to do so.
avatar
Wishbone: Yes, and when they couldn't convince them, their reply should have been "Then I'm afraid we won't sell your games", not "Well, then we'll just throw away the principles we've always stood for and do it your way".

GOG is to blame for allowing this to happen.
Hm, I can see your point, but then, I think it's ultimately up to the customers here. We decide what we will or won't support, with the money we spend here. If the majority here will gladly buy those new games, even with regional pricing, then surely it's the right decision for GOG?
avatar
Vainamoinen: I see. Such instances should be seldom though. Markets like Germany are too big to not make a censored version as well, and as soon as that butchered game exists, it wouldn't make sense not to offer it in less lucrative markets as well.
bansama feared that Japan might get a bit blocking-happy. And there might be quite a few banned games on Australia.
Ah, men, you are right of course (talking to several people), if you say Regional Pricing could be fair and a good thing for us, the customers.
But even if the prices would be adjusted for "poor" countries, so the gamers living there could afford their hobby, it would be unjust, since people in rich countries would maybe have to pay a lot more, though the individual is not rich either.
You really should create an international prize, which is low enough for everyone, as it exists on GOG already.

Again, it is about ideology. Most of the customers here also buy games from Steam and similar companies, since it is convenient and so "cheap". I could not do that... but, I am also one crazy dude who uses Linux and fights for freedom in many areas, blabla.

I think GOG will succeed with this new concept, if these games are great indeed. You know, something like Skyrim, which everyone wants to play at some point in his "gamer career". If this games are not so great, as someone pointed out already, this perhaps will fail. (And to be honest, I hope so.)
This is a decision everyone has to make for himself. Some, like me, will be sure what to do already, some will be confident when these games are actually mentioned, and so on.

BUT! If this will spread all over GOG, if it will affect other OLD games in the future, I will stop using GOG all together. And oh my god, I would hate to have to do so!

F4LL0UT: Well, maybe in that case the GOGers would have aimed their hate rather at the developers that we *actually* owe this new policy to. :P
avatar
CharlesGrey: Pretty sure in most cases the publishers are to blame. Game developers just make games, and are mostly clueless when it comes to the business side of things. ;P

xxxIndyxxx: No, as far as I am concerned: no game is worth it. Its for this reason I ONLY buy games on steam now when they have a huge deal. Since steam is getting a lot of oldies lately, that were only sold here before, using gog is getting less and less appealing. If this is going to happen for all games here, then i will not buy any games new here. It,s better for my wallet but it,s still disappointing. When gog use to be good old games, they were the only store were i felt to customer was the most important part in the business plan. Now they are getting just another store and I will take my wallet to the cheapest one aka steam christmas and summer deals.

CharlesGrey: But Steam has regional pricing too -- been that way for a long time, no? Personally I don't consider Steam an option at all. Had a brief flirt with it, but that didn't work out and I don't intend to ever go back to it. :P
Yes they do but they have way better deals then gog so in the end steam will be cheaper ;). I never had issues with steam tbh. And I do not consider steam DRM too bad, sure it`s drm but that never was a huge reason to use gog in the first plase to me. There are drm that I really dislike but steam (basic) isn`t one of them.

EDIT: I also don`t like how gog uses drm as an excuse now. Use to be one of their core mechanics like fair price but now if there is a small of big complaint by their user base they hide behind drm free: see TET,s quote ot better have a game in 195 countries drm free then not have it at all or something...."hey it.s not too bad, it`s still drm free, who cares about all the other crap you have to put up with...."

I don't understand. We're supposed to be HAPPY about regional pricing? In exchange for Assassin's Creed episode 1214?
Steam is spamming the big publisher crap enough.
How about you work on your Linux support instead?
Or maybe it's time for a GoG clone...

And that's the beginning of the end for GOG.

If I could buy this Assassin's Creed episode 1214 without uPlay DRMs and at the same price as in every other retailer in Poland - sounds to me like an option worth having.

Black Flag on gog? Yup, I'd be in. Then again, I've never used Uplay OR Steam, so I'm not exactly fat on Assassin's Creed games.
So if Witcher 3 is distributed by Namco/Bandai in Europe and Australia that means it's getting the regional pricing treatment.
Probably they thought if W3 is getting it anyway, maybe we can get some other AAA games too.
Make the best of the bad situation?

That's how I see it right now.
The potential for old publishers renegotiating their contracts is quite worrying though.

blotunga: So what will stop people to use a proxy or VPN to buy the games from another region (where it's the cheapest)?
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: What stops people from going to pirate bay and getting everything for free forever?
Um, principles? Aside from the fear of law, principles are the only reason why people break/don't break the law. Principles are the reason revolutions start. They are the reason for what's currently happening in the Ukraine. Because mighty lot of people didn't like their principles stomped by others. And if you don't keep your principles towards us, your customers, then I don't see much reason to uphold our principles towards you. One thing I can tell you for sure. With this decision, you effectively increased piracy of titles that will appear here with regional pricing.
I agree with those who say wait and see, if you like what comes out each day/week/year then make a purchase; if not, don't. GOG can't stay in business at all just selling the best 100 old games for $4.99 forever and has to find ways to add product to their catalog...I mean really, don't most of the long time GOGites (or whatever we are called) already have all the good old stuff?? I like that they support some of the new indies stuff, and always look at what comes in new....doesn't mean I'll always buy them, but I like a choice. I've gotten old games on steam that don't work on newer computers, that GOG thankfully gets working for me.

Just not sure why all the "this is the end" type talk....I hope this will strengthen GOG's ability to remain viable in the marketplace.
I've been frequenting GOG less and less since it moved further towards being a run of the mill games merchant, what with the many modern game releases. I have nothing against modern games ideologically, it's just that there are often better sales for them to be found elsewhere.

With this further step towards regional pricing for all games, I just don't see what GOG offers that sets it apart from the likes of Gamersgate, GMG or Steam. I'm not trying to be all doom and gloom about this development. In fact, instead of this move being a death knell for GOG I regard it as merely transforming the site into another average vendor. Some, including myself, might regard that as a bit of a shame.

also, I thought that game censorship in some countries (like Germany) was controlled by the government of those countries....no??

That's not the case here... yet.

I can see how this does move them more towards the mainstream...but my hope is they continue to spend a good deal of their time on older games (or at least great sales occasionally on the newer ones I might want to pick up). I have a Steam account as they seem to be the biggest player out; but I just don't like to go to all the other sites as I don't want to remember all the passwords required :) (old gamer you know!)
