War for the Overworld, Evil Genius, Dungeons 2, and others also join the festivities!

Being bad can be so damn good. The most fortunate of us learned this the right way: from videogames. It was twenty years ago when Dungeon Keeper first reared its highly innovative and remarkably horny head, single-handedly introducing a new breed of RTS games that we've come to call Dungeon Managements. In honor of the trailblazing classic, we're holding a Special Sale, where both the originals and their spiritual successors are going for up to -75%!

Short after the first game's release, developers Bullfrog followed up their cult hit with the equally entertaining Dungeon Keeper 2, which further expanded upon the core idea. When the series was regrettably discontinued, though, other developers picked up the torch and run with it, resulting in a number of great strategy/RPGs that toy with this concept of a godlike overlord reigning over comically nasty creatures in pursuit of mischief, mayhem, and reprehensible glory.

Widely celebrated among them is Brightrock Games' War for the Overworld, a game considered by many as the unofficial, slightly delayed Dungeon Keeper 3. As huge fans of Bullfrog's classics, the studio recently posted this extensive celebratory piece, where they not only remind us of Dungeon Keeper's legacy, but also share their own memories of it and talk about how it inspired the creation of War for the Overworld. It is quite the nostalgic read for all dungeon managers out there.

Other games took the core concept of controlling a mischievous evil-doer and put their own spin on it, both in setting and gameplay. Evil Genius, which turns us into a fabulously colorful supervillain, and Ghost Master, which gives us a team of ghoulish creatures to terrorize the living with, are both prime examples of that.

For more straightforward fantasy, however, look no further than Overlord + Raising Hell, which lets us spread mayhem by directly controlling our dark lord, and the maliciously charming Dungeons 2.

The Special Sale will last until July 3, 10PM UTC.

eiii: And the higher discount for the War for the Overworld base game is gone now.

Has that been a mistake?
I think it was - the discounts were meant to be the same as the launch/summer sale.

At the risk of spoiling it, does that count for the worker skins pack as well? I think they were only like 15% off at launch, compared to 50% off now.

JMich: For those that don't have it yet, buy Evil Genius.
Awesome game. I wish there was a sequel but that possibility likely died when Rebellion bombed with Evil Genius Online. Not much of a surprise given how the IP was whored out for a cash grab.

Ah, yep. I've let GOG know... enjoy it while it lasts :)
You originally released dungeon Keeper 2 v1.7 which has a weak AI compared to older patches. Has this been fixed by now?
Dungeon Keeper is 20 years old...that's crazy...

Could both of you elaborate a bit on what makes Evil Genius so good?
I already own it, but never found the inspiration to give it a real try…

On the other hand I’ve given countless hours to Dungeon Keeper 2, and maybe even more to Startopia.

Phenomenal atmosphere with gameplay to match. The game makes you feel like you're an actual super villain wreaking havoc across the globe, and it manages to totally nail that 60s/70s over the top Bond villain vibe. Think 'Dr No', 'You Only Live Twice', 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.
Though it uses the DK/Theme Hospital formula for base building, it introduces its own fresh take on progression to fit in with the context, and it works really well. Instead of building several evil lairs, you only build two bases (one after the other) that gradually grow in scale and lethality to parallel your ever strengthening grip on the world governments. And you have more than enough toys and rooms to make a truly unique evil lair. Expect to spend sleepless nights devising sadistic traps to torment would be spies and saboteurs. And torment you shall. Not only through traps, but with a seemingly endless range of hilarious interrogation techniques.

I should say though that unlike DK it's not a perfect game, or even really close to it. It's great make no mistake, but It's a bit of a flawed diamond. Your minions are sometimes unbearably stupid (though this at least provides comedy on occasion), some might argue that the islands are too small, the minion limit is too small (easily fixable though) and a potentially very interesting part of the game, building your own holiday resort as a cover, doesn't really work. None of these are anywhere near game breaking though, at least not necessarily. Just don't design your overly complex trap system on the path into your base (build it somewhere else instead), because otherwise your own minions will have an average life expectancy of around 15 minutes :P
What more can i say about EG? It's my forum avatar!

I just wish someone had put all the world conquest soundbytes on Youtube. Especially the Australasian ones. Comedy Bruce is so bad he's good.

In Evil Genius you get to build your super secret base and from there try to achieve world domination. It's basically Dungeon Keeper with spies and gadgets. Also aboveground you can mask your operation with hotels and other tourist attractions.
