So Japanese styled animation based games. Just to make that clear from the get-go in case someone wants to argue that Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't anime. It is largely influenced by, and animated as anime. Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Vollyball, in spite of being produced in Japan, it not quite anime styled.

They largely have a bad stigma.

And for many of you reading, I can't blame you. For every Cowboy Beebop there's an Xenoblade.

You know the drill. Grooming behavior, pretending to not be perverse while hiding distributing implications (Other M, some latter day Fire Emblem games), the first shot of a female character being a pantyshot, etc. That's only grazing the Marina's Trench of annoying tropes.

But they're not all like that. You got Chrono Trigger, Breath of the Wild, Secret of Mana, and other crown jewels of breathtaking interactive art.

In this thread, I have a small handful of questions as discussion points.
1) What anime styled game do you consider the best?
2) Do you like anime styled games in general?
3) Which trope/idea do you feel is the worst?
4) On GOG, what is the most anime game you've played? (Optional.)

As my listing stated, I'm clearly a fan of the classics, and Secret of Mana for the many flaws it has, is an absolute gem of a time. I'm biased, because I got it during a formative time of my life.

I do like anime style games. (I wouldn't have made this thread otherwise.)

The worst idea (to my books) is the Loli Appeal. I didn't namedrop Xenoblade just to casually call it out, as I recently learned there is an android character (Poppi) based on the design of an underage girl, whose various modes are pointed after the naming conventions of grooming various age groups. (JK business)

As for anime styled games on GOG, there's not really many I've played. I've got my eyes on Momodora, though.

Darvond: ...
Where do visual novels fit into this I wonder, they'd certainly give me more options to pick from, heheh.

It's always hard for me to pick a favourite, I'll just go with Tales of Berseria since that's something I've played somewhat recently and am really fond of. I think anything that has either really engaging gameplay or great characters/dialogue/story/that sorta thing is great, like other things I play I suppose.

And being a game obsessed weeb I do love this sorta thing, though I could definitely expand the list of stuff I've played, heheh.

I can't say I have anything I particularly despise, but probably the Incest related stuff which unsettles me.

The most anime game I've played on GOG is either Mary Skelter: Nightmares or The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, the latter of which is a strong recommendation, the former a cautious recommendation.

And you should definitely play Momodora, it's great fun and won't set you back in terms of time too much.

Thumbs up for the mentioning of Chrono Trigger.
If you like JRPGs, you might want to give the Trails in the Sky Series a go. I found most parts of it really enjoyable.

I do own one of them. It's just that for a good while I was burnt out on most turn based approaches thanks to four generations of slogging though Pokemon.
I only played a few, ragnarok online is fine, most korean mmos are very crappy and samey

why most of them have to look exactly the same with those so ugly faces? like adults with baby faces wth is that?:O
pretty disgusting for me

imho Cowboy Beebop is one of the worst anime, dunno why it is liked at all

1, Monster Hunter very good style and game, mortal kombat style fighter games are pretty good usually and there anime style is okay like Guilty Gear, Dragon ball games look nearly exactly like the anime that is cool i havent played these thou
2,not the baby style games thats for sure or the nonsense unrealistic ones like most final fantasy, no wonder i like western rpg-s way more
3,the baby faces , the whining insecure girls, the oversized weapons , the attack shouts of the boy characters
4, dunno :O maybe Fell Seal

1) Oni. Best anime game ever.
2) Yes. I like anime in general. The older I get, the more I like it...
3) Visual novels. Not against them but they're badly overpriced.
4) Battle Chasers: Nightwar followed by Gordian Quest. Once the latter gets out of development I'm sure it will quickly reach the first place. Really good game.

agree visual novels are garbage
I'm not a great fan of JRPGs but it has more to do with the mechanics than the art style.

Forgotton Anne is a nice anime styled game that's not a JRPG.
The Count Lucanor also has some great anime styled cutscenes.
Persona 4 Golden is pretty cool when it comes to style and story-telling, I just didn't like the repetitive JRPG mechanics, and it's not on GOG.

I think I haven't watched or played enough anime titles to have an opinion on worst tropes.
Oni?

Niggles: Oni?
Presumed.
Nier Automata scores pretty high in my book, as did " the last remnant " , i enjoyed the story telling in FFXIII a lot soo .... sega, square enix and that's about it though i'm trying namco bandai atm too, with their ace combat story thing going on. I watched a lot of anime in my twenties and still find myself enjoying the genre with their more adult range of titles, such as the late netflix releases like love death robots or ajin .... Still the whole cliche thing going on since 2000 is really killing the show as far as i'm concerned. I don't have a specific title going through my head when thinking of one of the worse anime styled games since they all include a fair amount of ego triggering, in a good sense but usually nintendo is where i say goodbye
1) What anime styled game do you consider the best? I'm not sure I watch many anime, but I play just a few anime-like games. I prefer to play games like Deus Ex and Morrowind. I cannot say that my "personal best anime-like game" is on a level to be the best... I just think Anima Gate of Memories was amazing but not any where near the Deus Ex, System Shock, Morrowind amazing.

2) Do you like anime styled games in general? I usually like good games. Good or bad looking games can be good or bad games. I usually play anything that I think should be good, any styles is fine.

3) Which trope/idea do you feel is the worst? I usually avoid 2Ds JRPGs and Musou.

4) On GOG, what is the most anime game you've played? Anima Gate of Memories and it was amazing. I'm also playing my first VN Higurashi and that's the first time I actually was able to play a VN (I usually avoid this kind of "game").

Also, many games that I would like to try are locked under a strong drm like denuvo.

Question by question:
1) Xenogears, without a doubt, is one of thebest JRPG out there and is painfully underrated.
2) I'm not a crazy fan of anime games, but I play them regulary and many are really enjoyable.
3) Annoying voice acting, that child voices, specially for female characters is very noisy.
4) Not too many actually, I play those kind of games more on PS than on PC, I think I have played When They Cry the most, or HuniePop (don't judge me, 90% discount is a big offer and the game mechanics are pretty fun! Is that the police knocking my door?).
1) What anime styled game do you consider the best?

The tie-in game for my favorite animu. The genre is a weird hybrid theme park style minigame adventure. 2nd place: Killer7. 3rd place: Phoenix Wright 1.

2) Do you like anime styled games in general?

No. I like the anime style itself (because it's cheap and easy to make look good), but (probably for that very reason) its correlation with quality is negative.

3) Which trope/idea do you feel is the worst?

High school setting. Isekai. Furries.

Sword Art Online is possibly the worst piece of art ever produced which doesn't involve IRL crime or body waste.

4) On GOG, what is the most anime game you've played? (Optional.)

Hatoful Boyfriend.

I like the characters of Bloodstained a lot (backed it through GOG day 0) and feel they've been terribly wasted.

I tried the Trails series and fucking hated everything about it, especially Miss Teen Florida.

Starmaker: I tried the Trails series and fucking hated everything about it, especially Miss Teen Florida.
You're gonna have to explain this one. And the mention of furries, since that's a very western culture thing. Though aces up to you since you mentioned Killer7. That game is something else.

RedTechKnight: Where do visual novels fit into this I wonder, they'd certainly give me more options to pick from, heheh.
Visual novels absolutely fit in. From Fate to Phoenix Wright.
