Nichijou
I hear Crunchyroll is totally legit, so I'll just link to their Nichijou page
http://www.crunchyroll.com/my-ordinary-life

It's one of the funniest shows I've ever watched. None of my friends found it funny though, so I guess it's really subjective.
Eden of the East.
Best anime ever is Trigun, and whoever says otherwise is lying. Other great ones are: Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Blue Gender and Yu Yu Hakusho.

All of my favorite series have been mentioned, but never in the same post:

Cowboy Bebop: Film Noir in Space. Enough said. Some have wisely considered it to have some relation to Firefly, which is another good show (but not anime.)

Ghost in the Shell: Personally I preferred Season two over one, but not by a large margin. The anime as a whole is awesome and has an intellectual feel.

Baccano!: As someone who loves all kinds of stories Baccano was especially interesting to me. The term "standard plot progression" does not exist for this anime, and that makes it all the more worthwhile! That and the super awesome fight scenes combined with humor of course.

Spice and Wolf: The sexualization of Holo sickens me, but this series makes Economics quite interesting, and revolves around two excellent main characters. Could use some more screen-time for the rest of the cast, though. They sometimes feel like characters of the day. Still, this is a series that should not be missed.
Pokemon

Seriously, Pokemon is awesome!
I've got something that will piss all over your titles, and no, it's not my beep (like Mike Strutter said to the stamp collector :)) ).

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Now THAT is something epic, right from the title. But the story and characters are even more epic. Just be sure to get past the first season, as it can have a bit of a slow start.

I also recommend Monster, Gungrave, Berserk and there are a ton more. But please watch LotGH first, as it will keep you busy for some time to come, having both sequels and prequels.

It's really a shame that not a lot of people have heard of this masterpiece and many more are put off because of the dated animation, but to those that stick to it till the end, I salute you.

M-joy!

I watched a series of mini-movies/episodes called Kara no Kyoukai' (Boundary of Empiness) about a year ago now, which surprisingly is like the only anime I've truly thought was 'great' in a pure sense of the word.

The story does have weaknesses, the pseudo-philosophical concepts it tries to put across translate to English quite badly, which makes some dialogue too wordy and jargon-ish. But on the positive side, it makes the plot and story concepts incredibly unique and unlike anything I've ever seen or read in fiction ever.

The characters are also amazingly well-done, which almost none (except perhaps the protagonist's sister Azaka) falling into cliches or stereotypes like in most anime. The interactions between characters are also very good.

Also, the series is pure genre-killer, it's not mystery, it's not horror, it's not romance, it's not supernatural, it's not fantasy, and it's NOT a hybrid of all of them, it's all of them at the same time, in a contemporary real-world setting. You cannot nail down the genre of the series as anything but completely unique.

If my word means anything, which it probably shouldn't, watch this series, it has an English translation and all. Also the novels which the series was based on have also been translated to English, if anyone is interested I'll link the link to the blog of the guy who did them. The novels are much better, many things of 'mature' content got cut from the anime.
I watched the entire "Kara No Kyoukai" movies, including the epilogue. It was great, has potential, and I really enjoyed the music score. But at the end, it started to fall flat, especially with the epilogue. I can't say no more, because it would be a spoiler. I do recommend to watch the movies in choronological order.

Also, there's going to be a sequel based (trying hard not to spoil anything...) in the novel that narrates what happened after the main events.

And to whoever liked "Kara No Kyoukai", they should watch "Shingetsutan Tsukihime", they're very similar, since Kara No Kyoukai was the prototype story for Shingetsutan Tsukihime (sames writers and studio as for the FATE series).

The epilogue was the short monologue in the snow right? I didn't think much of it beyond being just some exposition.
How exactly did you think it fell flat towards the end? The story was non-linear in it's chronology, so you can only really appreciate and understand it fully by the end. I thought it wrapped up amazingly well, the ending is also another good example of it somewhat subverting the cliche that romantic good endings have to sentimental or saccharine. It was a romantic good ending, but it didn't for one second feel sentimental or saccharine, it felt like it was an earned good ending, really satisfying.

Yes, it was the long monologue in the snow, with... **SPOILER!!** the new revealed personality **END OF SPOILER**.

It was a good story, not the typical one. And I really liked, but it started so well and different, excellent characters... and by the end -I don't know about you- but it tried too hard to hide important things and I knew how it was going to end too far from the end. I knew the decisions the characters were going to make and who the real villain was. In other words, it was predictable. But, predictable is not bad, is just, the builded climax didn't felt that way. It was just... The End.

... at this stage you could probably just answer "all of them."

What? You predicted that Lio was going to be the final villain? He had what, a 5 second appearance in the second episode. I thought it was amazing how the show subverted the cliche of the main villain always being the final villain.

Does GOG forums have spoiler/hide tags btw?

He was obviously up to something. And it was not only 5 seconds. There were conversatios about him sometimes in the movies, and when it appeared on screen, he was always "kind of" stalking Shiki. It had to re-appear in some moment, before the end.

And I wish there were some sort of spoiler tag here, but it seems there isn't... :(
