I wouldn't mind getting a couple of series recommendations from some people that are knowledgable here.

I'm not a fan of shows like Pokemon, Naruto, Dragonball, Trigun, or things that generally skew towards a younger audience etc.

Series I've enjoyed (starting at the top) include Escaflowne, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Evangelion, and to a lesser extend Cowboy Bebop.

I checked out Space Dandy recently and was unimpressed (unfortunately). I watched an episode or two of Attack on Titan which I know is all the rage but found the characters boring and overly melodramatic, not to mention, the setup seems like a rehash of Evangelion which didn't enthuse me either.

One of the things that Escaflowne did especially well, that I haven't seen often repeated is the way in which it balanced nuanced characters with a thoroughly interesting world the story explored through its overarching, unfolding narrative. I found out later that there is a particular brand of anime (I don't remember the Japanese terms) that is centered around action that is often described as being for boys and another more focused on character and love stories that is often described as being for girls and that Escaflowne was seen at the time as a hybrid of the two, so maybe that has something to do with its appeal to me as well.

To any aspiring otaku that thinks they can point me in a new direction - feel free - it's about time I find a new series to love post Death Note.
