Wait, it's not going to use GOG's chat function? I skipped out on playing Doom Eternal because it required an account, I'm not going to create accounts willy nilly.

I Guess we'd have to play a game with a single scum so they don't need chat. We have 8 players right now and AZ would probably join, I'm not sure if Joe is still alive...

Unfortunately yes. We used to use a public forum called QuickTopic which was working swell UNTIL last year when it finally shut down. You could literally post anonymously there. I had to pull off a tremendous archiving effort to save scumchats and other chats from being lost to the ether. So you'd need to sign up on whyquicktopicwhy.

What sets apart forum mafia from regular mafia is:
- we have more factions! yes we can have a cultist who recruits people into their cult. (could be flavored as a tentacled-anime girl infecting other girls with tentacles). this is like the mafia but it keeps growing. also masons, people who can talk with each other (could be flavored as girls who shared their contacts) or lovers (girls love hehe)
- we have more roles! cops investigate people to see if they're town or anti-town, doctors save others from getting killed, vigilantes shoot people willy nilly, roleblocker prevents a person from acting their role, etc
- the day takes place on several IRL days and the night at least two IRL days
- faction chats can be open at night-only (see previous game) or 24/7 (see this game when it starts), compared to the IRL game where mafia players just point at a target at night

In fact, GOG chat is terrible for preservation of group chats and doesn't work for getting two or three people to talk rapidly in the presence of a moderator.

Except this really doesn't work well. I have toyed with a few potential set-ups based around that, and two definitive issues were :

1) It can be psychologically awkward to switch sides mid-way when you've committed to one side.

2) Mafia is short and, honestly, pretty random. There's little difference between wrong reasoning and scum reasoning, between guesswork and dishonesty, so pointing any of it up and calling it scum is already a vague bet, turning out right or wrong mostly by chance. If you further halve the scum intent of a player (switching mid-game) it erases the already too short pattern which decyphering is the supposed core of the game.

So, I ditched such options, and came to the conclusion that, while narratively and abstractly fun, they concretely harm mafia games more than add to them.

It can't use GOG's chat function, since it doesn't support group chats.

I'm really sick. The sore throat ended yesterday, but I somehow feel worse today. My mom is going to go pick up some pseudoephedrine (decongestant) this morning that should hopefully help.

Fortunately the power stayed on. Even with AC and a ceiling fan, it was a pretty miserable night.
