I am wondering if anyone at www.gog.com is reading this and would consider helping Amiga OS4 users out. For those wondering Amiga users are still out there and the ones that are out there are using Amiga OS4 as their main OS along with new machines such as the AmigaOne X5000 machine that I am typing this from.

We have a number of games ported across to Amiga OS4 that require us to make use of the existing CD's for installation and use of the existing PC game files but given the age of some of the games, it is not always easy to find and this is where GOG is really good. Unfortunately due to the way that GOG operates its downloads, it is not possible to run the installation on Amiga OS4 and thus we have to use a PC and then move the files across.

So far I have been able to purchase the following games from GOG and use them with an Amiga OS4 executable file to have these run on my machine:

Quake III
Aliens Vs Predator
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Descent Freespace2

There are other Amiga ports such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale so this is a good opportunity for GOG to make some money here out of Amiga users who have trouble finding the actual CD versions of these classic.

Is this something that GOG would consider supporting?

Best bet would be to ask them directly via the support ticket system. Just like 99% of the support forums on the Internet, the forums are player to player driven with little staff presence.

One thing you can do and this is monitored by staff is add your voice to the Amiga wishlist items located here:

https://www.gog.com/wishlist/site#search=amiga&order=votes_total

Having said all that though, staff has stated a few times that there is no plans to add anything related to console games. I realize that the Amiga isn't a console but extrapolating from there, there doesn't seem to be much interest from staff from getting away from their big three, Windows, Apple and Linux.

And some folks would question their support of Apple and Linux.

Sorry couldn't help more.

edit: Just to mention, at least for Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, those are fan created ports. I don't foiks would be too happy if GoG or any other company turns around and sells what they worked hard on.

Also please remember that GoG themselves don't rewrite the games found here. That's done by the game's developers. GoG does do the occasion fix but rewriting an entire game for a different OS is outside of what GoG is for.

Talk about a super niche of computer users. That the Amiga platform still exists in any form is interesting. I wouldn't hold out hope for any GOG support. Being a PowerPC platform doesn't do you guys any favors either. That much extra work for such a minute audience would seem relatively pointless for most any business.

edit: Oh and just for reference, this is coming from a FreeBSD user. We're not as niche as those OpenBSD folks. We at least wear pants. :)

How about the NetBSD ones?

I don't have any BSD machine yet (I primarily run Linux, but UNIX-likes are boring by now), but from time to time, I like to liven it up with a Mac OS 8 or 9 box.

... I should get me one of the current Amiga boards some time. I would love to have one, but they're all a bit too expensive for my current budget. My 600 will have to suffice for now.

Somehow I was unaware that AmigaOS was still a supported thing until now.

I'd love to get a full PC for Amiga usage, but going above $1000 for an OS and machine I just want to play with seems a bit much.

I was looking for a method of installing it on a VPS but haven't been able to find one. You could run it within a vm though if you want to just try it out.

That was kind of my thought for now. I always like trying out different OSs, so I'll probably look into setting up some kind of VM to play around with.
Wow, I have found something more obscure than Linux users.

Dude, I have my pants on. Err, well, I *had* them an hour ago when I was out shopping groceries.

Wow! Tell me! What did you find? XNU users? NTOSkrnl users?

Wait until OS/2 users see this and a system war is at hand.

OS/2 users don;t play games. They're too busy programming ATMs.

(To explain the joke many of the ATM networks are still running OS/2. Or they were last time I checked.)

We already have. We try to not be complete dicks about it though. (I try, but sometimes fail.)

EDIT: While I have discs for OS/2 Warp v3, I don't currently have it installed on a machine, and I don't have any of the current OS/2 offerings: eComStation and ArcaOS. I did install HaikuOS (modern iteration of BeOS) on a machine at work though.

I envy you. I haven't had luck finding a decent OS/2 disc set. I should download Haiku and see how that'd work on an old laptop of mine. I've been waiting for R1 Beta since I got the laptop. :)
