The retailer I buy parts from sells most RX480 8GB models for $399.99 CAD regular price, althougth lately there's been some nice sales where they've been down to $299, then are sold out pretty much instantly. :)

Same cards from American retailers are ~$200 USD regular price.

I admit I haven't done much shopping around as i'm not really in the market. Maybe there's some better deals around.

I got the FX-8350 8Core, which was one of the higher range CPU's, in 2015 for £125.

Seen them going cheap over here too, most likely in preparation for the newer cards.

I haven't clicked on the article yet, wanted to post my first thoughts first.

I'm a pretty huge AMD fanboy and have bought only AMD CPUs/GPUs (and ATI prior to that) all the way back to 1994. I've owned many Intel systems as well but they were either hand-me-downs or "loaners" given to me through my employer or partner companies over time. I've always been able to look through all the data and compare apples to apples over time unlike a lot of the hardware review industry etc. For my own needs, priorities/preferences etc. AMD always came out on top at my budget point when I was looking to put a system together. I guess I just lucked out with the timing of things.

My last build was in 2013, an FX8350 system and I'm quite thrilled with the results even 4 years later now (almost to the day). Barring components dying, I'll probably use this system for many years to come, and the only thing I think I'd be likely to upgrade eventually is my GPU (HD7850 2GB), my SSD (120GB, far too small), and the HDDs (3x2TB). I lucked out on getting every single component on sale also and well within my budget, I just hit it lucky at the time. Currently if I went and bought the exact same make/model of every piece of hardware even on sale now 4 years later, it would cost me significantly more, because not only did hardware prices not go down but they went up on hardware that is now 4 years old. I still scratch my head on that.

A year or so later they came out with the 9xxx series of CPUs and while I expected them to kick ass, I was quite disappointed in how much they brought to the table, and at both a significant price premium over the 8xxx series processors, but also at a massive power consumption and TDP increase. You almost have to plug a 120V cable directly into the AMD CPU these days, it's getting ridiculous. And they haven't done anything since for the most part at least that I've caught wind of until now.

As a big AMD fanboy as I mentioned earlier, I have been rather disappointed with AMD for the first time ever, and figured that when I build my next system (as a separate system rather than a replacement for what I have now), I would have to seriously look at Intel and nVidia this time around. I always look and compare them all, but AMD/ATI always gave me the best value for what I was looking for, but my thoughts in the last 2 years were that it very well might be different next time around.

Which brings me to some cynicism kicking around my grey matter. Before I click on the link to the article, I'm going to hypothesize that the new processors use 550W of power and require a geothermal cooling system that you have to make arrangements with AMD to come to your house to install the underground piping system. </sarcasm><grin>

So now that I ribbed them a bit, I have to say I'm excited to even hear that they're still alive and doing anything at all. Now I'm off to read the article, thanks for posting it. :)

When I saw your comment about possibly requiring a 550W PSU, I had visions of you reading the link, seeing the TDP & exclaiming "WUT!?" & nerdgasming hehe.

ya cpu wise they definitely back in the game now :)

the question is, why would AMD stop using it?
People want to stream multimedia contents in 4k, nobody cares about DRM free hardware. Sadly.

If that's important to you, stop buying (new) x86 hardware.

More like Intel's marketing department always hyped it up like the new gen will be "up to 15%" (or more) betterer while most of the gains were in power consumption, and performance improvements were really marginal.

I am hopeful. I've been buying intel exclusively for quite a while now. But truth to be told, I would love to love AMD again.

For some time now, I've been considering putting together a new desktop. I've been waiting for intel to release a CPU with good integrated graphics, but it seems like their best (iris pro) is unobtainium as far as desktop parts go, and the best offer is a rather late (barely marketed) entry to the broadwell family. So their mainstream iGPUs haven't gotten much faster at all over the past few generations, even though they *do* have some decent, unobtainium chips somewhere in their lineup. That has been incredibly frustrating. I keep waiting and waiting, new gen after new gen, never do they release a high end desktop CPU with good iGPU.

I think I'm tired of waiting now. Maybe I'll give up and just buy a Ryzen and some discrete ATI card :(

Will be my first AMD rig since the DX4-100 days - anyone remembers those...?
