The prospective for the TV series, is sure looking bright after this. Amazon clearly cares about the its IPs, and is willing to invest money in order to ensure the quality of its products.
So... Tencent bought the company that owns the Amazon contracted studio which developed a LOTR MMO for long enough that it might had gotten a release next year.

Completely unrelated: I guess we all can expect a totally new and unexpected high profile fantasy IP releasing as an MMO within the next two years under Tencents umbrella :P
Tencent probably wanted to turn it into some cringey anime-looking shit

Yeah, Black Desert Online is like this, literally every character looks like some gay asian twink wearing massive amounts of makeup.

That's one of my major complaints about BDO. I don't mind people having the option to create characters like that but I prefer making masculine characters. That was a bit of a struggle, despite the fact that it has one of the best character creators in an MMO.

I knew it.

I mean the fact that word of its development after its annoucement was flat zero should be an indicator.

Also Amazon is spending MILLIONS on their Lord of the Rings TV show at the same time.

Between the MMO and the TV show, of course there's more money to be made an a show that everyone can easily just watch then invest and maintain a long term expensive MMORPG.

Since you brought up the TV show...

... from what I've heard it's in trouble as well.

After 3 years and boatloads of money they almost have a finished pilot (1 - 2 hrs), but from what I hear it's vastly underwhelming. Dunno... could just be talk... might be great (but I certainly wouldn't bet on it).

As for the MMO...

... sounds like a mess... and Tencent's involvement means I turn and walk the other way.

It was always bound to be terrible. Writers for hire coming up with their own material shoehorned into the Tolkien legendarium in an attempt to replicate for Amazon the success of Game of Thrones, most likely mimicking that entirely different style and tone.
