Actually, this particular effect is something that can be consistently reproduced, but is something only some players will encounter (and can be worked around if you know about it). The way to reproduce this particular crash is as follows:
1. Go to the Mage's Guild.
2. Buy (or steal) every magic item sold by the guild.
3. Without leaving the guild, attempt to buy a spell. At this point, the palette will glitch and the game will crash or freeze.

Another reproducible crash is to go into the Spellmaker and create a custom spell that is so expensive that the cost would overflow twice (that is, that would cost over 65536 * 2 gold to purchase). As soon as the cost overflows a second time, the game will crash to the DOS prompt, except that keyboard input will be broken, making it necessary to reboot the computer (if running on bare metal) or close the DOSBox window (if playing under DOSBox).

The game also has a glitch that lets you beat the game just by playing the same dungeon over and over again; find a speedrun and watch it for details (I believe the game was run at SGDQ 2016).
