jeffkiwi: This is true. I don't like control-freak parents. You can force your son/daughter to have a certain hobby and eventually they'll stop that hobby and do something else.
dtgreene: In terms of musical instruments, here is a good argument for steering children toward oboe and bassoon (and french horn, which seems to not be popular among school-age children, though it's decently popular among older adults): * A child, through peer pressue, will likely be steered toward what's popular, which in this case includes the electric guitar.
* By steering a child towars less popular (but still beautiful) instruments, the child can at least give those instruments a chance, and this can balance out the peer pressure toward playing the most popular instrument.
So, in this case, the idea is to balance out peer pressure.
