I have large respect for Alec Holowka ever since I played Aquaria. He not only programmed the whole thing from ground up, he composed all the music which is one of the best soundtracks I heard in a game. This was at time when the indie scene barely existed and you didn't have modern engines and tools where everyone can make a game. I think of him as one of the fathers of modern indie games.

The guy was insanely talented in many ways. If they noticed he had some psychological issues that lasted for some time already they should have get him help, not make it worse by posting about it online and get him killed. This is terrible.

Phil Fish, the author of Fez, was also pushed out of the industry by an angry Internet mob. He could have easily ended like this too.

Sad loss of life.

One only hopes those who thrive on internet mobbing will one day reflect upon themselves and have some level of self-awareness.

Klumpen0815: That's what happens when you drive someone into a corner.
Especially someone who is obviously unstable.

StingingVelvet: I'm all for treating allegations as just that unless proof comes out, and if Quinn knew he was mentally unstable then I do question the point of it all. However I will say the mental illness is the culprit here, not women in general calling out bad behavior from people in positions of power.
They should go to the authorities then and do so the right way, and not push people to possibly do things like this(even if unintentionally) through peer pressure.
Damn, this is sad news.

And I, for one, don't believe that Zoe Quinn has kept silent about this all this time just to tell it now. She's hardly been "scared to talk" about anything these past few years. So not buying her story.

Whatever were her reasons she decided to come forward with sexual abuse accusation soon after Nathalie Lawhead's sexual assault accusation to Jeremy Soule. She also mentioned that she deliberately avoided any contact with his friends because she just knew how he might "shit on her". And there is a tweet where she talks that many other victims of his bad behavior wrote to her.
Her accusation are that: he denied her a plane ticked back home despite prior agreement, yelled to her for 1 hour because she said "hello" somehow bitterly disappointing (voice tonality) and also he prevented her from leaving & entering his apartment on her own.
I would say it's mental abuse, definitely not sexual. I believe that part of it might be true, but the whole story seems a bit one-sided. And for some reason she decided to disable her Twitter account.

Can't put here google webcache link for some reason, GOG interpret it as a direct Twitter link.

Who could've seen something backfiring when outing another person as abusive on a public media platform? Certainly not the person who themselves has been at the nexus of controversy over the last handful of years to the point that they spearheaded an initiative to try and prevent online mobs from harassing others.

Since Alec made his Twitter account private not long after the initial accusation was made against him, it was hard to tell whether some people who can't seem to process that the people posting this stuff don't need them to dump their outrage at their abusers' doorstep for them had done exactly that or not.

It was a different tale with the Soule accusation though. I saw Lawhead's thread and decided to peek at Soule's Twitter account when it still existed and noticed that within a short span of posting "I believe you and I'm sorry this happened to you", someone then decided they'd drop over to Soule's account and picked the post where he was reminiscing about something his father said to him to say "yeah, well clearly your dad didn't tell you not to rape women".

The people attempting to capitalize on this man's suicide, from both sides of the argument, are representative of exactly what kind of person no one should aspire to be.

tremere110: Alec Holowka, developer of games such as Aquaria and Night in the Woods has passed away. Such a shame we'll never see a sequel to Aquaria. RIP.
Suicide ?
Holowka died on 31 August 2019. According to his sister, who posted to Twitter about his death, Holowka had been "battling mood and personality disorders" through his life but "was a victim of abuse". She explained he had been trying to correct his own disorders in recent years through therapy and medication. She also stated that Holowka "said he wished the best for Zoë and everyone else".

I totally didn't notice that all this again came from Zoe Quinn. Isn't she known as quite the gaslighter that's using sex and Internet mobs to get ahead due to complete lack of talent?
I've just watched this:
Alec Holowka - 'What the f#$% does it mean to be "Indie?"' [Full Indie Summit Aug 2014]

I really admire that he ends up talking about his own mental health issues (and how it all, once again, relates to the sine wave)...
I just want to say that I enjoy Night in The Woods experience and especially the music within.

Yes, that's what baseless allegations lead to and the insipid inquisition called Metoo. This is what happens when people are allowed to run amok in a witch hunt. And as for Zoe Quinn: well lets just say that if I gave my true opinion of her here I would probably get banned but I truly hope there is a special place in hell reserved for women like her.

RIP

What the fuck

Thats fucking aweful...gonna have to replay Aquaria this month and NITW was the greatest game I've played in 2017, perhaps I'm going to check it out again as well.

I'm at a loss of words, just a few days ago I just listened to the NITW observatory theme again which is excellent...RIP

This will never happen unfortunatly, at least not within larger scale. Some people might seem to repent a little bit based around the whole ProJared situation, at least from what I can tell. But thats by far not enough in order to make the internet a better place.

Lots of people kill themselves because of shit like this (a lot of people are unsung heroes who there aren't any news about, South Korea and Japan especially have a problem with suicides). At any case, it is extremly difficult to be supportive to someone online as a single individual, while on the other hand.it is extremly easy to just become part of any mob in order to "cancel someone out" since every mob on any side believe that they're always right.

I'm 100% certain that a significant portion of people would be absolutely unapologetic about any of this happening. Some people also don't really understand the impact the internet can have on people while some folks can also simply be/become assholes. And some others simply want to be part of something and don't think about the consequences that might arise.

Thats why I don't buy into any of the "drama news" business (This also relates to the whole NMS business 3 years ago). Its becoming seriously easy to rail up people over nothing. I do trend to believe that it is always the best choice to stand back and just observe the situation at all times (as long as you're invested/interested about it) without judging the people in the spotlight until all sides of any story are uncovered and most of the issues are resolved by law enforcement or to a different extent good-old journalism.

Any of this reminds me of celebrity worship to an extend and in the worst ways possible as well.

Who needs judges when you have social media? What the fuck.

Klumpen0815: That's what happens with public allegations. Now there won't be an investigation, there won't ever be any new art from him and he certainly can't grow out of his personality disorders further.
It's the worst possible outcome.

Here's the link to the original Tweet from his sister:

"Hey mom and dad, I drove my brother and your son to suicide, but he totally deserved it."
God what a cunt. I feel for his parents.

wait, this means you haven't read her accusation. Go and read it, everyone, it's anatomically impossible on the level of (ironically) "pounded in the butt by my own butt".
