I mean, if it runs perfectly fine without Steam installed, it's not really a big problem. Just a bit of dev laziness.

Judging by past patterns, you probably won't get any official comment till mid next week. Just for safety for your Steam account, probably best you just don't play it till/if it's sorted. Might simply be a case of someone overlooking something by mistake rather than any genuine case of slopiness or intent, you'd hope anyway!

Where in this is there a provision for games connecting to Steam? I can't see anything that would cover it.

OHMYGODJCABOMB: The title says it all. AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead And Undressed on GOG is nothing more than the so-called "Steam-rip".

The game has Steam files in its installation folder ("steam_app.dll" and "steam_appid.txt") and it interacts with Steam!

Luckily, I also have this game on Steam, but I think users who don't have this game on Steam might have problems as Steam starts tracking stats for this game. It can be perceived as an attempt to launch a pirated game and lead to the banning of your Steam account.

Maybe you should remove this game from sale until you fix this issue?
It might be a dummy file. A LOT of the GOG games with Steam files just have dummy files with redirects so that they don't actually call Steam. It circumvents the Steam API rather than uses it. I don't know if that is the case for this particular game.

According to post #3 from original poster, this dll lets the game collect some game data for Steam (such as played time). I wouldn't be even surprised if it contains strings like:

" Steam.Init(); if (Steam.SteamInit) { main.Run(); } else { MessageBox.Hide("Please launch the game from your Steam client.", "Error");}"

This. I think it's just laziness. Easier to keep a dummy file there rather than change the game launching logic. I always assumed those files were just inert when I encountered them (plenty of games from GOG still have them), but if they are still actually capable of connecting to Steam, then that should be amended.

That's what i was going to ask, since i've seen a few games with steam files, although the steam dll is like 80k instead of 300k or whatever.

Sounds like Skyrim, wouldn't run without the client and yet did nothing with it except to make sure you couldn't launch the game without steam...

I would also like to know if there will be any compensation for waiting and for putting my Steam account at risk?

I'm not talking about a refund, I'd like to keep the game, but this whole situation is absolutely unacceptable for a reputable store.
