Maybe it would be nice if games supported the color-changing (to display health e.g.) (are there any?)
And even if that was possible, a small light strip would be sufficient, for me.

If not, I prefer my PC and peripherals not to light up like a Christmas tree. (except my keyboard, for functional reasons)

When it comes to gamepads: always.

On an OS with a Xerox Alto knockoff GUI? :-P

Some people still consider every keyboard released since the IBM model M a knockoff!

Logitech's cordless PS2 gamepads were/are far superior to Sony's own wired Dualshock 2 gamepads IMO, especially the later revisions.

And not from my own experience but Hori's N64 controllers change hands for bigger sums than they cost when they were new.

I read a lot of good thing about the 8bitdo controllers too.
I use a standard Xbox One (wireless) controller for (some) PC gaming. If there's anything better, I probably wouldn't notice it.
