I would really like to add to friends list by knowing my friends name...he does not have any reviews up yet so I can't add him yet. Any idea around this other then telling him to make a forum post?

Hover over a user's picture/name and click invite to friends/add to friends. If that user has their friend list set to private you just have to reply to them and ask them to add you manually.
