I think it was because of the sheer volume of these threads. It was mostly after...I think when Galaxy became a thing? GOG didn't let you search for usernames, so there were people all over the place making thread titles like "Ricky?" and "Jeff add me" and "HEYYYY RAAAAALPHH" and whatever which seemed silly and nonsensical until you realized what was going on.

Oh, I remember the circumstances well enough, though I don't think I ever encountered the specific thread in question. I just dislike the attempt to "memefy" (memeify?) something mundane and forgettable. Then again, I find most memes unfunny. : |
