TheCoinGuy: P.S. I can remember seeing somewhere that you had some type of tutorial on Linux mint? If so...a link would be appreciated. I might switch to mint, everywhere I read people are using it with great success when it comes to gaming.
Yes, here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_try_linux_repostrewrite :)
The tutorial is in PDF format? A POL tutorial as well? Top notch....Awesome! I'll be doing some reading tonight!

Can't understand why Oblivion looks SO MUCH better in Ubuntu...but it does. I'll take it as a bonus!

Thanks again adamhm.

adamhm introduced me to Linux mint 2 years ago. After testing it on Virtual Box (VB) for a year and getting used to it, I permanently started using it since Jan 2017. Now, I carry the torch and convert people to the light. I do not know how many people thanked me for helping them install Linux mint from age 13 to 70. Adam is right. Getting used to Mint is as easy as getting used to a new windows version (God I still can't figure out Windows 10 even tho I am a MS professional :) ).

And yes. From my personal experience, Old games work much better in Linux.

Adamhm, would you happen to know of a wrapper or even a workaround or way to get the original Carmageddon Max Pack working on Wine?

Isn't that just using DosBox?
Running the Linux native DosBox would be the way to go then.

I got the game from GOG and I tried running it via Wine and it failed to launch. How would I set it up with DosBox?

adamhm: While you're at it, you might also find it useful to install the ia32-libs package, which will install the most commonly used 32-bit libraries & should prevent a lot of missing dependency issues later on as a lot of games are 32-bit. I recall Ubuntu being a bit of a hassle for installing misc packages like this, but you should be able to install it from the terminal using this command:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Quite possibly a stupid question, but that's what this thread is for right? =)

Is this recommended on a Linux Mint (18.2) system too? I tried running the command, and was told a whopping 99 packages would be installed. None removed, but I worry it will somehow break something with so many new packages.
high rated
All wrappers have been updated with a new version of winewrap.shlib, which includes a few more small changes & fixes.

I don't have it myself so I can't check, but if it uses DOSBox then it would be best to try to get it running using the Linux version of DOSBox.

That's to be expected - it should be fine :)

I was sure it always works like that and then I've discovered Lands of Lore 2 (:

- Unpack installer with innoextract or install game with wine
- Locate file called 'dosbox_<game_name>_single.conf' in the game directory
- Replace paths to correct ones in that file
- Install dosbox (if not installed)
- Launch dosbox that way: dosbox -conf path_to_fie>/dosbox_<game_name>_single.conf

OR you can try "Games Nebula', there is good chance that it will install the game without problems: https://github.com/yancharkin/games_nebula

And what's wrong with Lands of Lore 2? Works fine for me.

I got it to launch with DosBox but it runs horribly and complains about low memory. I mean from what I know about Dos games, 4gb is overkill and I have 8 which is the max I could upgrade to anyway. So I doubt it has anything to do with my actual RAM however, it seems that the Windows 95 patch runs it alright with Wine.

Usually dosbox has advantages over wine in games that can work both in dos and windows, such as scaling, easy keys remapping, etc.

Doxbox has quite a few options. There is another file called 'dosbox_<game_name>.conf' in the game directory, which is main config file.

Correct command:
dosbox -conf <path_to_file>/dosbox_<game_name>.conf -conf <path_to_file>/dosbox_<game_name>_single.conf

And, of course, you can try to adjust options in config file (sdl, render and cpu sections affect graphics performance the most). But some distros has slow, buggy dosbox version in their repositories. If you're using one of them, you have to install dosbox from another source or keep using wine :)

Don't bother with editing files, just get DBGL:

This really helps. +1. It took me an hour just to get the hang of the command line interface of DosBox and finding the right file to run the game only to see the game running so slow that it was unplayable. This should make experimenting with configuration files more easier from what I could tell from the homepage. This fails, then I could go back to command line or I could try games nebula. Thank you for the help. I'm new to Mint and DosBox so getting things running under the hood is a bit over my head.
