Personal experience.

Backed War for the Overworld on Kick Starter. Backed it because it was going to be DRM. The used Humble to Host the DRM free version.

It spent about 2 year not being updated, while the Steam version got rolling updates every 2 months.

Because the publisher are free to do whatever they want with the GOG installer for their game, and are free to sell their game (with or without the GOG installer) anywhere they'd like and for whatever price they'd like, even different prices at different places and include it in "decide-your-price" bundles?

(It's also not the first time a DRM-free version is available in a Humble Bundle but not in the Humble Store.)

I think I'll pass on the bundle, all things considered. I'll focus on my backlog for now, and even if getting the games on GOG will eventually mean spending a few more bucks, even on sale, it'll be worth it to have 100% certainty they work and won't disappear.

These all look like 'legit' installers. For posterity, here are the file sizes:

Broken Age: 2 GB
Grim Fandango Remastered: 3.9 GB
Luminocity: 860 MB
Massive Chalice: 797.6 MB
Oxenfree: 1.9 GB (64 bit) 1.8 GB (32 bit)
Titan Souls: 178.8 MB

I plan on DLing them today/tonight and can easily enough install and test, if you're interested.

*EDIT* Actually, Oxenfree is the only one that seems to show a major discrepancy in file size from GOG. It shows as 3 GB here for some reason, as opposed to Humble's ~2GB

Very interesting. I was under the impression that Humble was a solid choice for DRM-free games, and even preferred it over GOG when offered an additional Steam key. I guess that's the price of having no vetting whatsoever.

Perhaps the GoG version includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the same installer?

I was thinking the same thing. I'll have to wait until tomorrow before finding out if the games work though. DL speeds from Humble right now are pathetic, so that means it will take all night to get all the games downloaded.

I have the games from the $1 tier already, although Oxenfree and Massive Chalice I'm interested in I am not sure about getting just yet.

Hmmm $2.10 per game of the two games I might actually want. Technically nothing wrong with that...

I've finished the Humble Bundle's DRM-free version of Massive Chalice on Linux without any issue. That's the only game I own from this bundle.

I'm thinking of buying the average tier.

I had been eyeing this game for some time so at 75% off I decided to bite and, considering the small difference in price, I went for the DE which includes the soundtrack and an art book... or does it?

After paying for it I discovered the download page only shows a DRM-free download for the game, with no trace of the extras. Considering the redeemable Steam key included in the download page is called "Lumini Deluxe Edition", I highly suspect the extras are only obtainable through Steam, even though the Humble Store page doesn't warn about it.

So here I am, with a recently created refund request ticket and hoping their "support ninjas" get back to me and grant me the refund while the game is still on sale so I can re-buy the basic edition. There's more than 13 days to go, but I wouldn't bet a wooden nickel they will. :\

yeah that could be problematic if you don't want to use Steam (it doesn't bother me, if a game use it , if there's not another copy protection requirement, like a bunch of Kalypso games for example)

Just a rule of thumb on HB, outside a bundle there's a high chance the goodies are tied to Steam and not avaible as direct download..... that's unfortunate i agree. (that's not always the case, but it's too often the case).

Another workaround : you could try to deal with the dev or publisher... worth a try. I just guess you don't give a shit of the content tied to Steam (that's your prerogative)

Well, the art book I didn't care much about, but I was genuinely interested in the soundtrack... if I could download it directly from Humble, that is. I won't bother with Steam just to obtain it. Bu you're right about contacting the devs... I'll try it if the refund request fails.


Yeah, I also read it 3 times after I made the purchase in case I had misinterpreted something, and it's my main argument for requesting a refund.


PS: After opening the support ticket, I received the usual automated email response, which also encouraged me to, in case I was asking a refund in order to buy an item currently on sale, to go ahead and buy said item now, and we'll talk about the refund later. Of course I haven't done it, all the more so because the item I'd like to buy is the regular edition of the same game, so I don't know how would that be reflected in my game library and I wouldn't like to end up losing the game after they issue me with a refund and try to remove the "Deluxe Edition" from the library.

the only differences between the standard & deluxe are the artbook & soundtrack , since those are "tied" to Steam (well you need the client to download & save those elsewhere : could be an argument from the devs ... so be careful) , if you ask a refund for the standard edition well you won't loose anything , since the goodies aint available on HB.... that's my understanding (the only difference would be a different key for the steam version) .
