SC2: Nova Covert Ops is a pretty good redemption arc, though. I really enjoyed that one as it was more down-to-earth.
Thx for reminding me of Nova Covert Ops though, maybe I'll try that one day, sounds interesting and I liked Nova as a character.

Clear Sky's ending was too much for me though. I found Clear Sky a lot harder than SoC in general (though still mostly fun).

Which is exactly why I really can't overcome resistance to picking the game up to finish it. Other things left to do other than main story also involve "grind enemies praying for their randomized drops" and so on.

Final Fantasy VII - Made it to the final showdown
Final Fantasy X - Made it to one of the final sub-bosses
Final Fantasy XIII - Last chapter. Lost all will to ever look at the game again
See a pattern? :P At least I managed to finish XII.

X: Once you beat that sub-boss, the rest is all-but-guaranteed. You got to experience most of it, so not a big issue to look up the actual ending.
12: No idea how you managed to finish it without great push. I had to force myself to return to it (years later) and skip a ton. Not so great gameplay in this one.
13: Agreed. I finished it, but, again, it was forced. Terrible game, and the story was completely nonsense.
8: Not listed? I guess you beat it? Odd! That game *should* have ended around the end of disc1, or maybe somewhere in disc2. The entire final disc for sure is nonsensical story and not so great game.

I would have quit Final Fantasy 3 if I had played it around its original Japanese release, on an actual Famicom (as opposed to an emulator). The problem is the final dungeon, which is a huge compound dungeon:
* First there's the Ancient's Maze. Optional boss at the start (that gives you nice spellcasting jobs that become obsolete later). The dungeon is otherwise not too bad.
* Then you go outside, and can save the game here. (Note that this is the final save location in the game.) Unfortunately, you can't rest here, as the game has no Tent/Cottage item, unlike every other Final Fantasy game up through FF9.
* You then go into the Crystal Tower, which I'll get to in a moment, but for now you probably don't stay long.
* Then there's the Forbidden Land Eureka, an optional (but highly recommended) dungeon with bosses guarding powerful treasures, including the final jobs (which obsolete all the other jobs). At the top there's a town-like area, where you can buy powerful spells and rest. Unfortunately, you can't save here, and you need to walk all the way out, as the spell that would normally let you warp out of a dungeon is disabled here (and, in fact, is disabled in *all* of the final compound dungeon).
* (I would probably have left the tower and saved at this point, and that would likely have been the end of the playing session.)
* Then there's the Crystal Tower. It's a fairly long dungeon, with a boss at the end. This dungeon is long enough to take up most (all?) of the time I would be allowed to play the game.
* At this point, the game is *still* not over, and the game then thrusts you into the final area, the World of Darkness, without any chance to save.
* From here on, there is no way back, no way to save. (This is where I likely would have had to turn off the game, and hence where I would likely have quit.)
* If you go up from the start, you will fight an unwinnable version of the final battle, and after defeat, you have to load the last save (which, remember, is befoe that sizeable tower); instead, you have to go to 4 areas and kill the bosses there.
* Then you can finally fight the final battle. If you lose, you have to do everything from the start of the tower all over again.
Incidentally, I actually *did* quit Mega Man 4 and 5 over a similar situation; after you complete the first castle, which is long enough to take up a full playing session, there's another castle, and while you can continue there in case of a game over, you don't get a new password, so after turning off the game, you have to start the entire sequence over again with the first castle. Mega Man 6 also has this serious issue, though I didn't have that game back then.

12 might actually be my favorite one. I really liked the seamless transition between normal gameplay and combat. I did a lot of the side content too. It should be noted that I played the Zodiac Age version.
I attempted that FFX sub-boss many times, grinded up a lot of levels, and tried different tactics, but it would always end with the insta-kill move. It was my first FF, and I distributed the sphere grid like a drunk sailor. I do want to finish it up and move on to FFX-2 eventually, but watching the ending on YouTube probably isn't too wrong at this point.
I've had a save file for years now on FF13, and it has transcended Xbox console generations at this point. Again, I want to move on to XIII-2 eventually, but the game is just so unenjoyable. I have to go grinding again to pass the current boss.
I have started 8 at some point, but I'm not anywhere close to finishing it (had a lot of other games going on at the time). I did actually enjoy it a lot though, so I'll definitely come back to it later.
And.. I have a character in FFXIV too. That's one I've been wanting to get into, but I just don't have the time for it.

Another Ass.Creed Odyssey here: I got 85 hours in and 73% through the game according to the ingame stats and I knew it would take another 15-20 hours to finish and I was just done at that point with the game.
Not unhappy about it though - I got what I wanted out of the game and had a great time and got some good bang for the buck - no regrets.

(I'll keep this short to not derail the thread further.)
Thanks for the recommendations. FF2 is definitely on my to play list. I really like what I've heard from the game mechanics and music in it so far. About the FF1 PSX version, that's something I could try as well. In general I prefer the original versions of a game t remakes, at least when I like the system as I do with the NES, but since I've already played that one it could be interesting to play another version.

And no, that wouldn't have been the final dungeon, but in fairness it's pretty close. I'm a little surprised that's where you wound up stopping; but maybe I've just played the same so much, that I've forgotten how tough it was the first time through when I didn't know what to expect.

Having read through this discussion, it would seem that unless you cite specifics, it's almost impossible to determine where you've taken issue (possibly you've done this in a DM, but the public conversation seems unchanged). Where exactly did you feel this conversation was veering off-course?
I'm not asking to be obstinate... simply wanting to understand what prompted your moderation.

I don't worry about finishing games. Play them until they stop being interesting usually the repetition becomes too much and starts to bore me.

Jak 2 -> I got stuck on the final boss
Dragon Age: Origins -> As I progressed further in the game, the game's performance started to get progressively worse. Near the end of the game, and I couldn't bear the frequent slowdowns and crashes anymore, and quit an otherwise enjoyable game. I was playing the the PS3 version, I'm not sure if the PC version has similar issues or not.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution -> My PS3 went kaput while I happened to play this. While I did get a replacement PS3, I didn't have it in me to start over.
Shovel Knight -> Somehow I made it to the last stage. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it, and gave up.
A Story About My Uncle -> The last platform bits were too much for me. I stopped playing, but I watched the ending on Youtube.
