My son is on YT.
He streams videos there (MineCraft).

Now, regarding the upcoming xmas, I asked, what he wishes for.

He says, he has some problems with his Laptop (lagging, crashes), when he records his streams - and this utility could help to avoid these.

See - I'm not a very tech-savvy person, especially when it comes to videorecordings, YT streams, etc. - so my question to you YouTubers in here: is this gadget actually useful, if all he does, is recording his plays on his Laptop?

The way, I understand their homepage, it seems to be a way to stream PS3, PS4, WiiU and XBone videos...but does it also reduce the capacity needed to record, for PC only users - resulting in a lagfree, crashfree recording-session?

What I mean is: does this box take over (in parts, at least) the processing power, needed for the recording - to avoid the lagging and crashing of the Laptop itself, that he encounters now?

I hope, my question makes any sense.

EDIT: so far he uses a program named "Overwolf" to record his plays.

Looks to me like it's a hardware based recording solution as opposed to software, which would take the burden off the laptop. With that in mind, it would probably help with his lagging/crashing issue like he wants. But wait for someone that knows more about it. I'm not all that familiar with streaming videos.

I'm not sure if I could answer *all* your questions, but *wow*, this looks like a really cool and powerful piece of hardware meant specifically for streaming video.

What I can say is that if he wants to stream, it has the ability to push a lot of data, I assume he is probably already using a wireless connection to your local router which possibly could be overburdened by streaming devices using it or just not on a fast enough wireless.

This looks like a device dedicated to capturing and streaming video, it would most likely suit their needs and probably a neat gift too.

The LGP is primarily a recording device. It needs input via HDMI and can be hooked between PC and Monitor, grab the signal and record it.

The upside is that is encodes via hardware which takes off a lot of load from the PC - for recording. But if he livestreams, this device will only help him so much. In fact, it comes with new downsides.

a) The LGP is not compatible with OBS - the free tool for livestreaming but needs XSplit. XSplit license is included with the LGP but it's still a new streaming software to align to
b) Since encoding is done via hardware, it will introduce a delay to the recorded image (~1 second). So on a livestream, it will always look as if the image is lagging behind a bit.
c) Since a livestream still needs to be encoded, the LGP will NOT help overcoming the downsides of a weak PC.

So it really depends what he does. If he makes pre-recorded Let's Plays, the LGP is a neat tool. If he streams live, it's not really recommended.

Have you heard of NetInsight? I hear they're doing some really cool stuff in the way of syncing audio and video --and apparently it's a software solution.

It wouldn't be too hard to sync it as you can easily put another second delay to your microphone. Short side of the story is that for "live", the LGP is rather useless while for recording, I wouldn't give it away fro anything in the world :)

I just asked him (via SMS) if he uses this OBS and if he does livestreaming, or if he records his plays, edits them and puts them online afterwards - still waiting for an answer ;)

But I think (!), he edits his videos before uploading.

Like I said - I have no clue about these things ;o)

But apart from all that - I think, my questions have been answered.

My "fear" was, that this device would only be useful to Console-players, who want to stream their playsessions...and after reading all your answers, this seems not to be the case - I think, I have a xmas present, then ;o)

Well, they claim to have live sync, even in "live" broadcast.
