Cavalary: In my view, a demo would be a part of the game (even if possibly not exactly in the form it'll be in the final release of the actual game, since it may be based on a pre-release build), while a prologue should be something not included in the full game, so would also serve a purpose to play in itself.
it's very rare that you would find a standalone game that actually contributes to the worldbuilding of a main game/series that you might even consider it a bonus level. Otherwise, publishers abuse the "prologue" title by actually marketing demos that may be a part of the main game, but rather a short/limited copy of it. It's clickbait, really. In fact, I can see they've overused the word to the point it loses its original meaning.

Timboli: Some clearly get a bit pedantic when it comes to what constitutes a demo or not. We are never going to change their view, so time to move on. Similar on what constitutes a Giveaway.
There shouldn't be a debate.

If you're even gonna go there: due to the circumstances which arised in this time, that would be a situation I could have interjected.

But of course, you'd think it's too pedantic to address the flaws in the thread.
My point was, the title of the game was "Poppy Playtime". No mention of demo or prologue in the title at all.

If you scroll down you see paid Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.

So yes, it is a demo, or a F2P game with paid addons. But that distinction is not clear.

Crusader Kings 2 is a free game with paid addons. And "Chapter X" is often used by Paradox in their other games as a name for a bundle of DLCs.

I absolutely agree, that this game doesn't warrant mentioning in the giveaways thread, but it is not obvious at all, and any misleading going on is on the part of the game publishers.

I had forgotten that, but yeah, it is kind of a demo if you're basically not buying the full game even if the title helps (earlier I also considered X:Y titmes as well that lack any other fancy title). That's another tactic at it, unless the other "chapters" are even lesser than the main game, so it depends if you're really gonna miss out on anything worthwile.

But it was obvious it was not a giveaway, which was the point of confusion.@slickrcbd only mentioned the matter about it being a demo because that would also add to the problem because certain people keep including stuff like that. Either way, it was besides the point of being a giveaway because it wasn't marketed as one, and initially it's a free game itself (whether you consider it a demo or not), so that also wouldn't count as a giveaway.

CKII 's base game used to be a paid game, then they changed it, and DLCs still end up as microtransactions. A lot bigger than Poppy Playtime I don't think in that case that really even constitutes a demo either, since it's basically a sandbox and the multiple expansions are just enhancements. Mods can be added to it as well. It's not that different to, say, The Sims. More specifically Sims 4, since the same thing is happening.

(ø,ø): Last year they gave away games from December 20 to January 4. Not sure why they started on a wednesday. In 2022 they started on Dec 15 and ended on Dec 29.
If they continue the tradition this year, they'll probably start on Dec 19 and end on Jan 2.
Thanks for the info. You have clearly kept a better watch on the exact dates than me.

(ø,ø): Will be interesting to see if they'll continue with the giveaways next year. Heard rumors that they won't, but also heard similar rumors previous years. The store hadn't turned a profit yet last year though, not sure about this year. Guess we'll know when they release the 'Epic Games Store 2024 Year in Review'
Yeah we get rumors fairly regularly.
Me, I personally think they will be doing free games for a good while yet, if they stick to the plan, and want that plan to work ... it has to be over a significant amount of time. It is kind of wrong to focus on profit reviews at this stage, as they are kind of meaningless at this point. It's a longtime goal with longtime requirements. If they do it right, it should pay big dividends eventually, and they will be right up there sharing the podium with Steam.
My own suggestions for Epic Games giveaways would be for instance Jazz Jackrabbit 3D,Unreal Tournament 4,Unreal Remastered as for Valve Software Corporation it would be Half-Life 3,Portal 3,Team Fortress 3,Dota 3,Left 4 Dead 3 as for UbiSoft it would be for instance Rayman 4,Tonic Trouble 2. I guess that's it from their own so-called classics.

With the recent events over UT, I would think they would just reclass it as free games.

Valve can't count to 3.

Certainly. Especially since this year we've seen a rise in the number of Prime Gaming offerings for EGS customers (alongside more GOG ones as well), in numbers which sometimes dwarf the traditional weekly giveaway on the site. It's very possible they might view their Prime partnership as "enough freebies" and cut their weekly GAs, or at least slash their quality and/or quantity.

But that's only conjecture on my part. I have heard nothing to indicate that they're planning on changing anything.

Looked them up in this helpful spreadsheet:

Don't remember who maintains it, or where I discovered it. All credit goes to the creator.

I guess same goes to for instance Epic Games they can’t count to 3 & 4 including UbiSoft they also can’t count to 4.

So... Far Cry, Heroes of M&M series and others just have only 3 games?! O.o

In case of HoMM, Ubisoft only got it from 5, so technically they are only counting to 3 so far, Olden Era not being here yet :)

????

Aren't there also games made with Unreal up to 5?

If you're referring to Jazz Jackrabbit, they were actually working on it. They simply couldn't find a publisher for it at the time.

For UT4, that was also in development. Fortnite won out.

Ubisoft? Ditto to Far Cry as mentioned by others. They also publish the Might & Magic franchise, The Settlers...even developed and published parts of Silent Hunter up to 5. Heck, Black Flag is also AC IV.

Debating whether to get the base game for Assassin's Creed: Mirage or the Deluxe via UPlay. I don'y buy Ubisoft games like I used to.

They should let Fortnite Battle Royale to be dead in the first place.
