As discussion of the games given in giveaways is not encouraged and appreciated in the giveaway announcement threads, I've thought to start a new thread where we can talk about them. Are you happy with the freebies? Do you want to share opinions about them? Do you have tips for playing them (mods or options)? Are they DRM-free? Are you chewing on your bowler hat Roderduck style because you just bought it before it went free? Do you think they are killing the market or exasperating you with more backlog? Anything that comes up to your mind about them is opened up to discussion here.
Also, as there's a lot of shovelware on Itch.io, you could state here when an Itch.io game is worth getting. It should have some commercial appeal, not being some student's project or asset flip made with low effort.
I'll start with today's Star Wars Battlefront II free on Epic. I heard bad things about its multiplayer and monetization, but do you know if it's worth playing solo? I'm gonnna backlog it badly anyway.

As for Bomber Crew on Humble, after looking at the Steam page quickly I gave the code to giveaway for people who will miss it and maybe need it later. Clearly not for me.

Also I'm bummed with next week EPIC's Galaxy Civilization III, I would rather like more short indie stuff coming on. Among my Epic favourites were A Short Hike and Ape Out. And I hope Axiom Verge can be given away for free again as it's not on GOG and I missed it when it went free there.

During the Winter daily ones I was generally happy as we got Darkest Dungeons, so I can try it out before I eventually get it on GOG, and Solitairtica, as I enjoy card games and that's not on GOG. I prefer ga of games not available here yet generally, but when the game is GOG too and I like it I plan to get it when it goes on sale for very cheap (the devs got paid by EPIC anyway).
And very cheap is my current purchase power. XD

yeah I think it was varied enough to make most people happy at least for one game! But I already had Celeste, Abe's New & Tasty, Night in the Woods etc. Actually Alien: Isolation is a game I have watched some gameplay (of the Switch version) from Jim Sterling and I was intrigued. Not on GOG, so that's another one I was happy to get elsewhere. It's been praised as a very good stealth with great atmosphere capturing the feeling of the movies.

This is a complete list of what's been free up to now. I missed some early one and others I forgot to activate.
https://progameguides.com/lists/epic-games-store-free-games-list/

My "regrets":
Super Meat Boy - not on GOG, played back then, I'd love to have it here.
What Remains of Edith Finch - I'll get it here when I know I'll play it straght away without backlogging it
Axiom Verge - sigh, still hoping for a second round or unlikely GOG coming.
Thimbleweed Park - not too bad I missed this, it's on GOG and I'll get it when it's cheaper. I tried it on my phone with a free month of Google Play Pass and I wasn't so thrilled to be honest.
Darksiders 2 (Deathinitive Edition) - I was sleepy and didn't confirm the "purchase". But I'll just get it on GOG when I want to play it, as I liked the first one.
Aztez - again I forgot to claim. I'd be curious to see how it combines beat 'em up and strategy but I can live without

I only miss Axiom Verge , its OST is good :P

Super Meat Boy
I regret missing that, too, especially since it's not on GOG (yet?). I wasn't aware, at the time, of those giveaways. For the same reason I missed Subnautica, which I also regret though not as much.
The first game I got was Axiom Verge. I missed Celeste (twice) and the Oddworld remake, but I'm not exceedingly sad about it since I'm not so sure I would really like them.
To be perfectly honest, just a small number of the games given away on Epic really interest me and I'm likely to play. They mainly focus on new-ish games but I'm more inclined towards the oldies.
I regret missing out on The Long Dark and Alien Isolation since both are not available here. I know TLD was available on GOG a while back but it got removed from the store. As for Alien Isolation I doubt that'll even end up here but who knows.. I'm with the same mindset that if a game is free on Epic or it has a really good discount and it's not available on GOG I'll grab it there but if it's on GOG I'm getting it here. I'm also trying to avoid grabbing games that I have no interest in playing as I don't want to clutter my library.

I'm more inclined towards the oldies.
I have actually only played the classic Meat Boy, the original Flash game! No oldies on EPIC, but they have given away some retro vibe stuff, like the Messenger, Celeste, Into the Breach, Minit, Pathway, Textorcist, to name some. I'm not sure where to draw the line at what can be consedered "retro". Into the Breach, Moonlighter, Kingdom, have pixel art. Anodyne 2 and Stick it to the Man possess a late 90s feeling.
I d Battlefield games and have owned most of them up until 4. Battlefront 2 looked great, so I picked it up. I couldn't tell you if it was good. It has so many mandatory full-size game updates that I couldn't play it more than a few days. It's probably in a better state now, but it left a bag taste in my mouth. I suppose this is gaming now.

As for other freebies in the past, my kids have loved Steamworld Dig games. And another was called A Short Hike that was really lovely.

I have to GOG The Long Dark. It was interesting but incomplete, so I set it aside.

I enjoyed Jurassic World Evolution. You make a park and run it. It wasn't too hard. But my park attendees may disagree. I had a carnivore break loose because I built a fence wrong. Many sims died on that day

Pillars of Eternity is great.

If somehow you haven't played Defense Grid, it is very fun and satisfying.

I still haven't played Where the Water Tastes like Wine, but it looked like one of the most unique titles I've seen in a long time.
