Big changes are here.

My Account is the heart of your GOG.com experience. It's the one place that's 100% yours, and the place you always go to download your games and manage the entire library.
Starting today, your My Account is completely new - remade and redesigned from scratch to better support our growing library of games and many of your biggest requests. Aside from every usability fix we could think of, we've also introduced brand new tools to keep your library organised, and new social features to stay in touch with your friends.

The list of new features is long, but you can see the whole thing on our forums. The most important highlights include:

--Support for friends lists and chat.
--Shared wishlists.
--Advanced filtering and custom tags for your library.
--A new, detailed order history.
--Accessible game changelogs.

We're sure that these new changes will greatly improve your overall user experience on GOG.com, and we can't wait to hear what you think on the wishlist and right here in the comments!

OldFatGuy: So, since it's MY ACCOUNT, is there any way I can get MY ACCOUNT back to the way it was before I just rolled in here tonight and discovered everything all gone to hell???

Al I heard with the upcoming Galaxy release and changes was how everything was OPTIONAL. Well, I want my OLD MY ACCOUNT BACK. You know, simply click on the game on the shelf, and then the store card page is RGHT THERE as well as the GOG Downloader being RIGHT THERE.

There's been an old saying that's been around for centuries GOG. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The old MY ACCOUNT page wasn't broke. Why did you "fix" it?

Oh well, no choice but to vote with my wallet I guess....
+1

I'm not happy with this non-optional new account interface. This Galaxy fad has gone too far.

I'm especially unhappy about the replacement of PMs with a chat. PMs were like emails. A chat implies real-time conversations. They are not the same thing. As someone who writes a lot of long emails and forum posts and blog comments, but almost never participates in online discussions in real time, I'm absolutely sure they are not equivalent.

danatblair: I reject the notion of there being one true way to interact with a computer, just different ways that feel more natural to different users.
There are different ways of accomplishing the same goals. Some are mostly a matter of preference, some are trade-offs between different factors (like security vs convenience), some are simply superior to others. With that being said - we need to respect the fact that most people are dumb and lazy, unwilling to learn new ways to interact with software, even at the cost of being inefficient. As a simple example - operations done in bulk, such as mass renaming of files according to a simple pattern, are best done using simple shell scripts. In spite of this, Joe McClicky is much more likely to perform these tasks by hand, since he's allergic to the text terminal. Inefficient ways of solving problems need to be implemented and supported, so that people can waste their time in peace ;P.

danatblair: Also, it's not just arranging boxes.
Yeah, sure. I was just giving an example of what I have seen mentioned repeatedly in the comments. There are many issues that need to be addressed, and quite a bit of functionality to implement.

avatar
danatblair: I don't use steam and I won't use this. the fact that there is already a game where the multiplayer is galaxy only saddens me (double dragon trilology), because that is just a different form of drm.
I guess you really felt the need to put this in these terms, huh? Props for being uncompromising, I guess...

avatar
danatblair: If you are one of the people who did like arranging on the shelf that is fine.
(...)
On my first read I think I misread your intent. I felt like you were being dismissive of an earlier post I made about the parts i dislike and why. I was specifically stating the functional ways in which my experience was hindred. Upon a rereading I think I misread your intent. If so I'm going to say sorry.
I can see your conundrum all too clearly - you seem to assume that I'm in either one of two camps: either I have problems, or I disagree there are any. That's not the case - I don't really have much beef with how things are right now, but I agree that there is a need for additional functionality.
It's like saying "It's a very good game, but I don't like it" - some people can find it difficult to stomach.
I guess my comments tend to be quite disorientating, since they're usually so middle-of-the-road that they're hardly "for" or "against" anything in a clear way. My previous post basically said the following: "what we have now is good and absolutely needs to be changed" ^^. It needs to be better, but it also needs to be more versatile. It needs to cater to people like you and people like me.

cal74: Now, while it would be better to say "hey guys, we were in a rush so we have started putting live features which will be required for The Witcher release, don't worry, we'll continue the work on it and provide the following improvements in the future........", it's not that easy because they have to take into account PR as a whole and not only to the GOG "hardcore" (not said negatively I'd like to point out, I'm one of them) users who like to have something tailored to their needs.
I still think in the long term open and honest communication pays more off than the current kind of "PR", even with the newly targeted, non-"hardcore" people. Trust is lost quite fast, gaining it back is a long and hard way.
Can someone enlighten me what this manual-sorting buzz is all about? I own nearly 150 games here on gog and never felt the urge to use this feature (I didn't even know it existed).
You can now search for games and create tags. So how is that different to the old design?

Oh I was wondering WTF had happened to my gameshelf; Glad I checked here first!

I must say right off the bat I think it needs to be shrunk by at least 75%; Everything is too big now, makes it hard to navigate unless I goto List mode.

I kinda miss the 'shelf' motif; I didn't like it that much as it wasted a lot of space, but the virtual shelf for my games was a cute visual effect. This new one doesn't seem to have a 'thing' going for it; I can see the shelf is sortof still there but it looks really half-assed now. The whole thing reminds me of Windows 8's bland flat soul-less Metro interface in many ways.

Everything just looks bloated and ugly; Even the font somehow looks ugly!

The interface feels like it was designed for high resolution tablets, which can't run any of this stuff, so it doesn't make sense!

I know there's this urge to 'keep things fresh', but I suspect most of us would be quite happy if the interface didn't change much, except for the odd tweak occasionally to add new features.

If you really can't resist the urge to get all 'extreme make-over', maybe you should start a forum Brainstorm for interface ideas to get some more community involvement?

Also, can you engineer it to degrade more gracefully so more browsers other than the big three can access the site? That would be ace :)

Before you could manually sort games when you were in grid view. Now you can't. A lot of people used it, so they are upset. Alphabetical sorting as it is is not that great since the names of the games don't follow a clear pattern, and with the unbundling games from the same series are now sometimes spread around the library (the Myst series is a good example: Myst, Riven, Myst 5, Real Myst...).

That's basically it. I didn't use it either so I don't care one way or another, but a lot of people do.

That's a bad example, because those games were never a bundle. :P
A better example would be Battle Isle Platinum, which has Battle Isle 1, Battle Isle 2, Battle Isle 3, Historyline 1914-1918, and Incubation.

You're right, they weren't bundled. It still is a good example of why manual sorting was so appreciated even before the unbundling. =) The unbundling just made it worse (a couple of good examples caused by the unbundling: Battle Chess, Chinese Chess, Battle Chess 4000; also Softporn Adventure, that comes with the Leisure Suit Larry games; the Blackwell series had the same problem too, but it was partially fixed in the meanwhile).

Manual sorting is about one's ability to organise their entire library the way it made the most sense to them.

Searching and tags are fine, but they can't replace manual sorting. Some people care only about searching and filtering, others care about having better control of their entire library, some care about both. It was an option useful to many that was scrapped with no alternative put in its place.

And since we're on the subject, I'll add the relevant Wishlist entries for anyone that would like to vote, and has missed them:

- Manual sorting

- Keep or bring back manual sorting

- Bring back game boxes in the game shelf

There's also an entry regarding the return of he old PM system; I haven't yet given feedback on the Chat system, but I'll leave the Wishlist entry here regardless:

Restore the old PM system

It looks like I'm not the only one who would like to have the option back to display all owned games on a single page. As nobody seems to have added a wish for it so far I've added one. You can vote for it here:

Edit: Add the title of the wish list entry.

Voted, and added mention and link in my feedback post on pagination (post #645).

And will include it to the list of Wishlist entries I will be posting, cheers.

Thanks! I've also added a comment to the wish about alternatively making the number of games displayed per page configurable.

You could ask Judas to edit that bit into the Wish entry, this way it will be more visible (people don't always read the comments). He has helped me edit a couple of wishes in the past. Normally, this is where I'd say "just PM him", but you can't anymore, so... chat him? (yikes!)

When Chamb talked about the new account system for the first time, he said the default setting for the library would be 100 games per page. Default setting implies that there will be other settings as well and so I hope we will get the option to view the whole library on one page again soon.

This would've really helped a moment ago when I had a game marked as updated and the filter for updated games believed nothing had been updated. Looks like they changed from the red graphic after the game name to indicate updates to a small blue circle to the left of the game name to signify updates (I eventually realized my update was for Lords of Xulima).

Note the failure of the New & Updated button on the old shelf was the reason I used this feature. Looks like it'll now be the reason I periodically swear about this feature being taken away.
