Notifications What? They’re not part of the new account system changes? Yes, I'm well aware of it, but here's a good question – why aren’t they? They supposedly let us know of updates to our games, new messages and forum replies, and new friends invitations, right? Except that the notifications system is extremely borked and unreliable; it has been for a very long time, but even more so ever since the new account system rolled out.
Attached are some screenshots I took a few days ago, but they’re still valid as nth has changed since:
(1) GOG_Notifications-Mess1.png: what I see when I first log in on the forum; in spite the account tab saying I have no notifications, I can clearly see that little gear that indicates new forum replies next to forum threads.
(2) GOG_Notifications-Mess2.png: what I get when navigating to one of my account pages via the account tab in the nav-bar; quite a different picture, eh?
(3) GOG_Notifications-Mess3.png: what I see when refreshing/ reopening the forum page; looks like the system caught up, right? Emm… does anyone notice a big difference though? Yep, the total does not count the chat notifications, or the friends invites ones, only the game updates and forum replies. And no, this is not a one-time or forum glitch, this happens no matter what page I visit after I’ve gone through point #2 – see attached screenshot GOG_Notifications-Mess4.png.
So, the only way to find out if I have new messages or something changed with my friends invites is to periodically hover over my account tab. And quite regularly, chat notifications only show when I visit my chat page which defeats the purpose of the chat notifications in the account tab.
Interestingly, today I’m not getting any forum notifications either, unless I open my chat page, then refresh the forum page. So I also have to regularly check the forum pages to spot that little gear I mentioned earlier, or open one of my account pages just to make sure I won't miss them.
A recent discussion on this whole mess can be found starting
here.
Addendum: Speaking of the chat page and notifications - messages, and notifications next to contact names appear/ refresh live, but the notifications in the account tab on he nav-bar do not (chat notifications included, of course), unless one refreshes the entire page. This is due to the chat panes working separately, on top of the chat page (
https://www.gog.com/account/chat), i.e. posting a message doesn't automatically refresh the entire page.
Now, one would argue "but wasn't this also the case of the PM system?" - true, and in a sense it was even a bit worse, as new message notifications next to user names also required a refresh of the page. But the point is that changes should improve functionality, usability; the only thing improved is the live update of new message notifications next to user names, and that seems to serve only the purpose of "talk to those that are talking to you now!, you can find out who's talking to you on the forum later, when you move away from this page".
The game updates notifications are the most important for most people, and they’re unbelievably unreliable:
1. Sometimes I get notifications in the account tab, but the total in the account tab don’t always match the number of updated games in my game collection page – see attached screenshot GOG_Notifications-Mess5.png. The explanation given for this is that there’s a delay between the two, but I’ve yet to figure out if there’s any consistency to it as the delay seems to vary.
2. Sometimes after checking out an updated game, i.e. clearing the notification, it pops up again; the most recent for me was
M&M 8.
3. The worst of all though is not getting a notification at all. I’ve noticed this happens with:
3.1 Games that were added with a special promo code, like
TW3 and the nVidia codes; Never got a single update flag.
3.2 Games that were added with codes I received as a backer, like
Wasteland 2,
D:OS,
Pillars of Eternity, etc.
3.3 Games that were unbundled but are still sold as bundles; I’m still waiting for my update flags for
M&M 3,
M&M 4-5 and
M7M 6.
3.4 Games that were added as pre-orders and came with exclusive pre-order content, like
TW3.
So, while the changelog is a very welcome addition, I have to ask – how are we supposed to know there’s a changelog we can consult, if we’re not being notified of its existence? Since all of the above are pretty much part of the norm now, why are they not included in whatever database this update notification system is targeting?
If it weren’t for the “What did just update” thread, and the valuable and reliable work of Judas and our fellow GOGger
mrkgnao, I’d have never known of a good number of updates.
I’d also like to mention
PaterAlf who has taken it upon them to post the changelogs in the respective game fora, since they’re not being made public, in spite of
good arguments for the opposite.
There's also a
Wishlist entry for this, if anyone would like to vote for it.
Fellow GOGger skeletonbow made the following comment in the above mentioned thread:
I have a gut feeling that once Galaxy is stable that will be the preferred update mechanism and there wont be any other notifications sent out because it is too much hassle and too problematic and will not be considered worth fixing, so it'll just be removed, kind of like the manual library sort.
I fear he’s on to something, and have to agree with them, unfortunately.
I’d like to take the opportunity and mention that it’s been two (2) weeks now since the new account system was rolled out, and ten (10) days since a blue text posted in this thread.
Any chance we get and update?
