Watched this years ago with a close friend of mine. We used to go to the cinema for so-called "Sneak Preview Nights"...or we spent the whole day (morning to night) in the cinema ... hopping from film to film - totally no matter what was going on, the main thing was "not seen yet" & "don't worry about studying". Same we did with renting totally unknown movies from video stores (which are nearly all dead nowadays) - that´s how we get to eq. SotD.

So if you are getting to watch a movie that was not even released or unknown & it was good by any means...that was just the cherry on the cake.

We still grin sometimes when we think back to this evening: we didn't know the film, so we didn't even know what to expect (because it wasn't that common to watch trailers on the internet yet - at least for us) ... this kind of humor surprised us and we had to stop the movie several times because we could not stop laughing (in a zombie movie...). Fond memories. Sorry for off topic, but could not help myself for writing it down. :-)

timppu: Maybe that is exactly what we need: a superhero zombie movie. Captain America: The Zombie Holocaust.
You mean Marvel Zombies? Cause that's an actual thing. Not likely to happen as a movie though, with Disney holding the reins.
My personal favorites in recent times are:

1) Scouts vs the Zombie Apocalypse (not as good as Shaun of the dead but is still pretty hilarious as far as Zomcoms go)
2) LA Horde ( a french zombie flick that is action-packed and reminiscent of Left4Dead)
3) Train to Busan (a fantastic Korean Zombie movie)
4) Rampant (another Korean zombie movie) - I'd also recommend The Kingdom on Netflix (a series) if you liked Rampant as they have a similar premise
5) Overlord ( the doom movie we never got)
6) Rammbock: Berlin Undead ( highly recommended)
7) .REC series (Gives off a strong resident evil vibe and in the right away but the zombies here are more like deadlites)
8) The Serpent and The Rainbow (A look at the origins of the zombie legend)
9)Re-Animator (Lovecraftian zombies)
10) Brain Dead ( a personal favorite of mine)

Jorev: snip
Avoid the quarantine. [REC] is so much better.

Note: Many of these are foreign language zombie films. REC is in spanish whereas Rammbock is German.

Yeah, that was easier in the past, with no internet or Youtube trending pushing everyone the same trailers and whatnot long before the movies even appear, etc. It seems harder nowadays to bump into some great movie you've never heard about before, and know nothing about (even that it is praised by others). At least Hollywood movies, maybe with "foreign" movies that may still happen.

In the distant past, one such movie for me was e.g. The Hitcher (the 80s version of the movie), or Blind Fury. Oddly, both happen to be Rutger Hauer movies, but whatever... I knew nothing about either movie when seeing them the first time, and I was totally blown away, especially by The Hitcher.

Nowadays that _might_ occasionally happen if I happen to see some movie on the TV that has slipped under my radar years before, when it went on the cinemas. It might help that I don't actively seek information about new movies, but e.g. Youtube still constantly pushes ads for new movie trailers to me anyway. For instance that "Watchmen" movie might be one such movie, not sure if I had heard anything about it beforehand when seeing it the first time on TV a many years ago, and liking it quite a bit.

Agree wholeheartly. :-)
This happened also to me. & i like it to stumble coincidentally in "never seen movies from the past".
It also occures that as I get older, films, series or stories work for me that my younger one would never have watched.
Or if i watch old movies again, i have a separate approach of them nowadays and mention content i never did before. :-)
My favorite zombie movie is I Drink Your Blood.

Jorev: Dawn of the Dead, both the original and remake but the original is my favorite
Yes, but WHICH VERSION!?
Personally, I prefer Argento's Zombi edit, followed by Romero's Cannes cut. I like them about the same, both have their pros and cons. The only version I really don't like is Romero's theatrical cut, which omits too many good scenes while retaining some if the more sloppy editing from the Cannes cut. Don't get me started on the horrid use of music in Romero's theatrical cut: Argento exclusively uses Goblin, Cannes version almost exclusively used cheesy 50s library music. Romero couldn't decide for one or the other, so he lets both play on top of the other, to headache-inducing effect.

Thanks for the tip.

To me, any zombie movie is still more entertaining than 95% of the stuff Hollywood squeezes out.

Some good ones I saw recently; Alive (South Korean), One Cut of the Dead (Japanese), What We Become (Danish).

Darvond: Pretty sure I'm just a cynic, but if you're still looking for Zombie movies in 2021, maybe you're the zombie. The genre is such a dead horse that even it itself has returned to the grave after overexposure.

timppu: Yeah, it is all about superhero movies these days, it seems... Even the praised movies like the first WonderBraWoman movie, or any Batman movies, are yawning.

Not that I disagree with you about zombie movies, I think that genre has been rehashed enough (both in movies and games), but I'm sure it will be rehashed again sometime in the future.

Maybe that is exactly what we need: a superhero zombie movie. Captain America: The Zombie Holocaust.
Don't joke, the comic books have literally done things like this; there were even What if and Elseworlds dedicated to these; such as the aforementioned Marvel Zombies series.

1: Shaun of the Dead
2: ... There are no other zombie movies worth watching, IMHO. Unless Army of Darkness counts as a zombie movie.

Gerin: It's called The Dead. You know you have the right one if it stars Rob Freeman and takes place in Africa. It won't change your life, but if you like zombie movies it's worth watching. Enjoy.
avatar
timppu: It sure does sound a bit different from the rest of the zombie movies:

Gabriel Conroy and wife Greta attend an early January dinner with friends at the home of his spinster aunts, an evening which results in an epiphany for both of them.

Interesting. I didn't think they could reuse a title like that.

Thanks a lot, never heard of this one but I'm going to watch it tonight.
