as I was going through the city this afternoon, coming back from work, snow everywhere, and everything so dark and quiet, I felt a great desire to come home and start playing some huge atmospheric game that would keep me busy the entire winter...

I was thinking about the beginning of Soulbringer, the snowy sections in Guild Wars, Neverwinter Nights... these were all games with such a deep winter atmosphere...

I'd love to play such a game this winter but unfortunately all the games on gog either don't have the right mood or I simply played them a lot already :)

so I dare you, gog (or goggers ;), to bring me the ultimate winter game experience (I need it!!! ;)
Well, Neverwinter Nights would be kinda the opposite.

Play Morrowind: Bloodmoon! Superb atmospheric stuff, AND you get viking knockoffs! :D
Fallout: New Vegas. You'll feel so hot you can turn down the heater inside.
Wait, do you mean just any game, or a game on GOG?

If it's just any game, then I say S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. I'm not really sure why; it isn't really that winter-y, or anything like that. But it's just an awesome game to play when it is overcast outside and there is no sun shining through your windows, and when you have the heater on to ward off the heat. Also, it is decently long, and if you do every sidequest and really, really take your time, it could be even longer.

But a game on GOG? Well, considering I have played few of the games on this website, I can't really give you a good suggestion. Sorry.
thank you guys :) I was kind of hoping one of the gog-runners will read this and say to himself: "well well well, we should bring the XXXXXX here, that will blow his mind!" :D

but thank you all too (well, except that New Vegas, that's really anti-winter game, and I love winter, I don't want to play Tropico to forget it ;) even though I could pretend the ash is snow... :D

I'll have to try STALKER... too bad my computer will probably refuse and commit suicide when I try to run it ;)

give me your specs I'll tell you if it'll run.. probably. 'case STALKER is awesome.

..Další čech? Ha!
Gran Turismo 5.
Icewind Dale 1&2 is cold dark and unforgiving and at time extremely lonely

Secondly i highly beyond all means and measure suggest The Penumbra Series... its based in an arctic wasteland and its an action adventure puzzle solver... image Myst meets Resident Evil... They have complete packs of all 3 games, they run perfectly and they are an absolute must play... i get the damn chills thinking about it... i cannot stress how awesomely bad ass these games are

There is also Cryostasis its akin to Penumbra but its no where near its depth and its more actionie then adventureie

Finally there is Metro 2033 One of the better games i ever played, Stalker has NOTHING on this game... its pure logical building atmosphere with a great message and you dont need a 4gig mod to make it what it should have been from day 1... the most memorable game ive played in years... takes place during the aftermath of an all out nuclear war. Its a pure ash covered winter wonderland.

If your going to go with STALKER though then i highly recommend STALKER Complete 2007 or 2009 if its done..

You meant Čech, right? Right?!
I'll go with Fallout 2 [i WILL finish it this time], and System Shock 2. I finished it last time, at 4AM Jan 1st 2010, i think a Shocked New Years Eve will become a tradition for me.;>
And perhaps a bit of Jagged Alliance 2 and M&M4+5.

No, I hardly ever write capital letters after first letter of the sentence, even when they're supposed to be there. I'm lazy that way.
Its not a long game like Baldurs Gate or Fallout, but you might enjoy The Winter Rose. It was made a few years ago with AGS, and its freeware. Just a fun, atmospheric adventure game.
Midwinter - an old game if you can find it and run it on current system.
If you get a Stalker game (and I recommend you do) you may as well go with Pripyat. It's the latest and indisputably best edition to the series. It's also the most finished and bug free. It also uses the same engine so it won't kill your PC any more than the first will.

Personally I'll recommend a Total War game. Either Napoleon or Medieval 2. The latter if your computer's not so great. Also, from GOG I'd recommend Outcast and Total Annihilation. Both offer quite a few gameplay hours to say the least.
Beat Hazard and STALKER.
