Well, you could try your hand at Minecraft. It's got snow-tiled worlds aplenty. Plus: you'll find so much things to do, it will fill up those cold, dark days pretty easy.

Minecraft sounds fun but this calls for something heavily-story-driven... but thank you all, I really have a lot of titles to choose from now ;)

Navagon: If you get a Stalker game (and I recommend you do) you may as well go with Pripyat. It's the latest and indisputably best edition to the series. It's also the most finished and bug free. It also uses the same engine so it won't kill your PC any more than the first will.
Ah such fond memories... I did never finish that one because I was cut off in the middle of it having other concerns. But I remember lurking around the Jupiter Factory at night, my trusty tuned GP-37 at my side, recovering confidential documents when I suddenly get ambushed by a group of mercs in the administration building. The fight that ensued was incredibly tense and stressing and totally badass. The fight spanned over multiple floors, a constant cat-and-mouse game... I was also playing on highest difficulty so that might have spiced things somewhat up. Those random moments just make the experience so great and what it is!
So yeah, the whole thing is just steaming with atmosphere you would smell it coming out of your hard drive :P I will definitely finish once I've more time on my hands.

thanks, this is it!!! I've just installed STALKER, started to play it, and I was there... (must admit I got my ass kicked by the very first group of bandits but I don't mind restarting on lower difficulty as long as the gameplay is fluent)

also the weather here changed, the snow partly melted, so everything is greyish, it's deadly cold, and the winter blows heavily... perfect symbiosis! :D
I'd highly suggest the SYberia series. Plenty of snowy area's in them (not compeltely, but throughout the game, especially later in them).
Daemonica is a hard game to find but you play a supernatural type guy as he examines a small mideval type town for signs of supernatural stuff as he tries to find out what happened to this old couple that vanished. It's set in winter and I love it.

it was actually released twice already with a gaming magazine here in the Czech Republic, last time it was two months ago :) but you're right, this game is awesome...

If you include console games then try the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance game. A good chunk is set in a city and then a mountainous area in winter.
Icewindale series ? Or NWN 1 second campaign in the beginning.

During Winter I like to play through the epic storyline in lord of the rings online. Yeah it's a mmorpger, but the "behind the scenes" storyline is great, and it keeps me busy during ice cold winter nights.

I also reinstalled Assassins Creed 2, it's dumbed down and repetitive, but somehow I just love the characters and the feeling. And it keeps me warm... :)

And I have to agree on Max Payne, the comic-cutscenes alone are just so ice cold, I love it. You know what, I'm going to reinstall max payne 2. Right now.
ok, so here we are, 4 years later :)

many many new users and many new experiences and games, so once again I dare you, gog (or goggers ;), to bring me the ultimate winter game experience :)

what games do you know that have a deep, wintery atmosphere, where it's dark, it snows or it just feels quiet and cold in them? ;)
Fahrenheit or Cryostasis.
edit: especially Cryostasis.

The Long Dark looks to be pretty wintery. Survival game set in the cold Canadian north.

For GOG games it's gotta be Banished. Why? Because Banished has seasons including cold winters where everyone can die if you don't keep them supplied with firewood and warm coats. But the real bonus is, unlike real life, if you don't like the season you can just hit the fast forward button.
Alpha Protocol for its Moscow section.

But as pure winter: Icewind Dale, The Long Dark, Syberia or Fahrenheit. Those are the real options.
nice :) thanks a lot, keep 'em coming!
