So a new Prey game has been announced, sounds cool right? Well, do you know what it's being called? Prey. Just Prey.

Needless to say, this is the latest in a trend of naming new stuff after old stuff and everyone getting confused. Honestly, this is probably the worst example of this happening. At least with something like Doom when someone says "I'm playing Doom!" you can guess they're probably not talking about Doom 2, 3, or any of the mobile games, you can whittle it down to 2 possibilities. Here, we have a series of two games which are both named EXACTLY THE SAME.

For a while I was sympathetic this trend, I could understand why you'd want to make a squeal/reboot without all the baggage of number and subtitles as some sort of culmination of the series. But now this is just getting out of hand.

Wanna know what's even more confusing? New Prey has extremely little to do with the original Prey, and nothing to do with Human Head's Prey 2.

My guess is they want to just completely reboot it.

A similar trend I have noticed: Giving programs completely meaningless titles, in order to obscure the basic concept of running a program for the casual user.

For instance, I use a tablet/laptop hybrid called "Surface". In order to get its pen to work properly, I have to download a program called ... "Surface" .. And Windows 10 is shipped with an default image viewing program called "Photos", and a default Email client called "Mail", and a default music player called 'Music'.

Together with the way GoG/Steam clients and Android devices obscures the download and installation process, future generations may grow up to be technology illiterates who don't grasp the concept of "installing a program".

That is already happening. I have seen children swiping tv screens for example. There is always the problem of where technology becomes more intuitive and easier to use, the underlying skills are lost. Same has happened with most things, I mean ask someone nowadays what feet are used for and they will probably tell you: "For pushing car pedals, and treadmills in the gym"

There is still hope however, they cannot yet deflect giant meteors, even with Brucie nuking himself.

Hell, we've seen this a number of times on GOG already. Numerous people have come on the boards wondering how to get their game to work because Galaxy wasn't working and they didn't understand the concept of installing the game files via browser/DLer.

We need more games with 2000 in the title. Like SimCity 2000 or Tyrian 2000. I wonder why that naming convention died out.

Joking aside, it annoys me as well to have to call the new Rise of the Triad as Rise of the Triad (2013) or the new Shadow Warrior as Shadow Warrior (2013) to differentiate it from the original games, but at the same time, I'm not sure how else they could go about it. Giving clichéd subtitles (like Reborn, Resurrection or Rewhatever) could be one way, but it reminds me of all those horror film sequels from the 80s and makes the title feel silly/cheesy.
