Surprised to see that the 20th anniversary of Gothic's initial release wasn't highlighted a bit more prominently here, given its popularity in Poland and that especially the Witcher games probably would have turned out quite differently without having drawn inspiration from the Gothic franchise.

Instead of praising and pointing out Gothic's numerous innovative advancements in various aspects of game design for the thousandth time, here's some footage from the 1998(!) pre-alpha, featuring - among other things - the first, quite different iteration of the combat system as well as being able to manipulate/utilise objects, such as corpses, for luring/distracting beasts.

To another 20 years of open world games trying to be the next Gothic and failing to do so, I guess.
GOG does currently have an ongoing Gothic sale, 80% off each on Gothic 1-3 and Forsaken Gods.

That's actually shown here, as part of another later build from 1999:

And yes, I had expected GOG at least putting up a short news post acknowledging the occasion.
CDPR's Senior Quest Designer/Coordinator Philipp Weber or Quest Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz (who both have stated their appreciation for Gothic in the past) probably would have been game for an interview too.

Including the official remake, judging from that absolutely horrendous 2019 demo at least.

Heeey1 thought I was the only one to celebrate it in quietness. :D
Thank you for bringing it up and running here on the forum! and for a quiet promo too! ^

20 years! This is sic! ^ :D
Eversmoking Joint Gameplay for this occasion :)

These three runes carved in stones are interesting, 20 years and no one knows the meaning, the other three are a mirror image, and there are some clues carved at those stones too.

Next year 20 years of Gothic 2. (A nice story about *Atlanteans in expansion NotR)
There is Gothic 2 Online Skirmish Multiplayer too https://gothic-online.com.pl/site/language?lang=en : )

I can see that Gothic Remake(2022?) is a byte like Gothic 3 or even 4 games (graphic, atmosphere) :D I will buy it... only here in this game store Dear THQ Nordic :D

gog.com approach?
"People are unpredictable, you are people we are people, equals unpredictable square" approach :D
Well... like most of the big companies lol "gog.com is relying on something external and guaranteed somehow" :D

Some people want some people,
some people want some games,
the other ones want to write posts,
most people do not change.

Gothic! 20 years! :D

Now, something for hardcore players
Heart of a Fire Golem in 14 minutes 1024x768x32bit square picture
and I have challenged myself already
Heart of a Fire Golem in 13 minutes 1366x768x32bit wide better picture
Will you challenge my second self?
both recorded by Win + Alt + R while playing.

Happy Birthday, Gothic!

Cheers gog.com !

Thanks for Topic TzarHar !, and for Promo Link DiffuseReflection ! and for Alpha Version CMiq !

Great game. Innovative, imaginative, underdog. A joy to play.

The remake's been doomed from the start for the simple reason that it's current year.
Not to speak of the devil but considering the socio-political climate at the moment I don't have high hopes that they won't adjust a couple things that could be considered "problematic" these days.
Like effeminating or gender-swapping one or multiple of the major NPCs like Gorn or covering up or even entirely removing Gomez' female sex slaves, among other "issues".

I recommend keeping an eye or two on the Gothic Reloaded remaster, which, to all intents and purposes looks to be the preferrable unofficial alternative to whatever THQNordic is going to offer.

That would unhinge the setting at least a bit. It's basically an all male prison colony - the sex slaves are only there because the "Baron" demands them to keep the shipments of ore going (which the outsiders need to defend against the orc hordes). Those poor women are an important part of showing what kind of depraved asshole the Baron is.

Introducing female "normal" prisoners would introduce more problems if they don't want to ruin the "world-full-of-bullies" experience, because with female prisoners the usual suspects wouldn't stop at protection money...
Gothic II: One of the best and hardest RPGs ever made.

You, me and everyone else is well aware of the repercussions changing/adjusting even small details would come with, but is THQNordic/Alkimia Interactive as well(?)...

Amen.
Really looking forward to the Dzieje Khorinis / History of Khorinis expansion.

jepsen1977: Gothic II: One of the best and hardest RPGs ever made.
I've tried playing Gothic II several times over the past few years; but I always give up and quit because it just crashes too much. Maybe someday...

Gothic 3 has turned out to be one of my favorite open-world RPG's (it always runs well). I've played it through multiple times and thoroughly enjoy it each time.

Gothic 1: Like "2", I've tried a few times. I don't recall it crashing a lot - but it starts to feel like punishment the way the KB/Mouse works. I keep hoping I'll get used to it (and, to a point, I do), but after awhile I just can't take it anymore.
The original topic subject conveniently still applies as back in 2002 on the 29th of November Gothic II was bestowed upon us.

Gothic 1 and 2 are the games that sparkled my interest in computers.
Back then I was a teen and our first computer arrived when I was around 13. It was a piece of junk, and games ran awfully on it because I had no clue about what system requirements and drivers were. Learnt a lot of useful things there.
Had a slither of hope that today maybe Dzieje Khorinis (Wishlist entry) or the Gothic Reloaded Mod (Wishlist entry) would be announced as having reached Gold status and released on GoG (alongside other mods/total conversions like Legend of Ahssun (Wishlist entry), for instance) but alas...
A couple things from today resp. a couple days ago to commemorate the 20th anniversary:

Derbe gut gealtert (Short retrospective on Gothic 2, via Der Spiegel, in German)

Gothic 2: Piranha Bytes' Meisterstueck (Exhaustive retrospective via PC Games, in German)

Guide to patch Gothic 2 Gold Edition back to original, expansion-less Gothic 2 (via the WorldofGothic subreddit):

The original instructions come from the Gothicz.net forum by Milhaus and has since been edited by u/auronen and u/nr3jokim

Note: Do not install Union or any other patches until instructions mention it.

This guide is only applicable for GER and ENG languages right now. Polish version will be supplied as soon as possible.

1. Install Gothic 2: Night of the Raven in either English or German version
a) GOG: Either contact GOG and get original G2 Vanilla installer (and skip all of this to step 7), or install it via their G2:NOTR installer
b) From CD: Install it from CD via its installer, nothing special

2. For language selection, pick the correct GOG installer option. Select any language you want, but the rest of the guide sets everything to German language, except for the voice acting. So if you want Polish voice acting, select a polish language. As for the text translation, that is covered in step 8.

3. Download and copy this to the System directory in the game and rewrite the original file.

4. Download and install (be sure to pick the correct game folder) this

5. Download and install (be sure to pick the correct game folder) this → pick gothic2_fix-1.30.0.0.exe

6. You need to disable all VDF archives in Gothic2/Data that include NOTR assets. We need to rename all VDF files containing Addon in its name. The game checks files for its file extension, so we will rename all affected files to file.vdf.disabled, such as example: Gothic2_Addon_Weapons.VDF rename to Gothic2_Addon_Weapons.VDF.disabled

7. Now we need to manually install Union. We need to install both Primary Patch and Union itself. Primary patch is really important as it fixes the music. You can find both Primary Patch and Union here. If installer asks, we are installing Gothic 2 Classic

8. If you want to play in English, you will notice that dubbing stayed in ENG, but all the text is in German. You can fix that by copying this to the /Data/ folder in your Gothic II root folder. We are currently searching for the Polish vdf, but your only choices right now are now German (don't change anything), or English (use the VDF sent above).

9. You can now install other language patches and other mods, if you know some.

10. Start the game with Gothic.exe, not GothicStarter.exe
