Magnitus: Hopefully, Gabe and his heir(s), or whoever your chosen lords are if you shop elsewhere, will be benevolent in giving you continued access to those games in the future.
Most have physical copies you can get for console. + Steam DRM is not really an issue. It's a solved problem.
Were the store to disappear you can be sure a solution would be available.
The only exception to that might be an online game that required a unique server.

As long as they keep making the console. Legally, nobody except the company making the console has a right to.

How do you figure that out?

Benevolent Gaben has a patch for your already? Or do you intent to make yourself personally useful to him and his heir in order to hopefully obtain one if you manage to somehow ingratiate yourself to them?

I won't bore you with the details. But the fact that most games are pirated from Steam in a few hours is a demonstration that it's not a big problem to solve if need be.

Have you not heard of emulation yet? Even obscure arcade hardware can be emulated on just about anything. You don't think an emulator for a major console won't eventually happen too?

So basically, your solution to drm is to completely discard your legal copy of the game you obtained through legitimate channels (because that copy is a dud) and turn illegal means to obtain the same game you paid for (after much googling and hopefully, it will be trojan-free).

You'll have to excuse me for preferring a less absurd more straightforward mean to enjoy my games drm-free.

You are the one proposing the unlikely scenario of Steam disappearing and the game library being unplayable. I'm simply pointing out in such an unlikely event the means of dealing with it are already available. I don't actually think it would happen in the 1st place.

And no, I'm not suggesting pirating anything. I'm saying the same techniques to remove the DRM can be used were Valve to dissolve. I'm also saying that emulation can cover any loss of console hardware.

Your solution apparently is simply to have large numbers of games be completely off limits to you. Seems extreme to me.

EverNightX: I was thinking over releases this year and I don't know that I can recall many that were this dense with significant games such as:
Unexceptional:
Tears 2 (please don't call it "Zelda"), Diablo 4, FF16, Starfield [EXTREMELY unexceptional], every remake you listed, which are many.

Yes, it is a good year for gaming. But don't overdo it. Most years are good years for gaming. I don't think one is standing out other than "AAA titles are releasing in the right timing after a new console and GPU shakeup launch after pandemic delays".

Actually, if you are serious about keeping your games, you want to proactively try it out. You don't want to wait until you have to resort to it to find out it doesn't work for a lot of your games.

I've had issues with emulated games when I tried it over 2 decades ago. They are unofficially maintained and your mileage may vary.

In my opinion, it is the gaming industry that is extreme for wanting to charge me the high cost of ownership (as opposed to rental), but not confer to me the benefits that are expected with it.

Its a sensible position that most people who haven't drunk the cool-aid already would adopt, but unlike a lot of people, I'm just stubborn enough to stick to my guns about it.

Otherwise, note that I don't have a problem per say with rental, when it is honest about what it is. I enjoy my Netflix subscription. Its a very affordable way to watch a lot of movies and tv shows. Similarly, when I was much younger, I'd play a different game every weekend that I'd rent at my local video store for an extremely affordable cost.

I don't have a problem with neither of those things.

Really, its the way the gaming industry retailers go about it when they are selling games that I take exception to. If you sell it to me, its mine. You no longer get a say as to whether I get to play the game I purchased or not.

This year my wallet is suffering badly.
While I don't care at all for action rpgs or loot games like Diablo, I bought several games that can be considered 'new', also a new console and a handheld (soon™, in hopefully 3 days).
