Hi Guys,

Could anyone help me out here with step 8.. Im trying to open the VHD file to setup as the virtual hard disk but it doesnt let me open it. Instead, it just goes inside the folder and it goes to program files etc...

Make sure on Step 5 you are right clicking the xmp file and opening it with WinRAR or 7Zip or what ever zip software you use. I made the mistake of not doing that correct my first time. There is an actual file inside that one named "VirtualXPVHD" just add .vhd after that to make it a virtual hard drive file.
I would not count this as "Solved". This actually describes how to play the game on Win XP on Win 10. It is not compatible with win 10. What is described here is a solution to play the game but with a third-party software and a legit copy of Windows XP (You need to activate the OS with a serial code, even when using the .vhd file).

for those who aren't getting any sound, right click the volume icon on the bottom right of the screen. select open volume control and unmute anything that is selected as currently muted. this worked for me but i'm not sure if it will work for anyone else.
hey,
ive tried your workaround and as of yet i cant get the game running. obviously im doing something wrong or ive missed something so im hoping someone can help me out if possible. please keep in mind im new to this tho, so keep it simple, im not technical you know.

so basically ive gone through all the steps and have the virtualbox running xp.
'gangsters on vboxsrv' is listed under network drives
i click on it and it open the shared folder into which i installed the game
i double click the executable and it suggests i insert the cd-rom

with the info above, can you tell me what ive done wrong, where ive messed up?

my virtualbox xp doesnt have a 'cd-rom' listed among its devices
and i installed the game itself under windows ten

well sure if you can help me out, that would be great, thanks
Not a solution, just a workaround. And even that is temporary, as the WinXP license will expire after 30 days unless you have a valid key.

I managed to run the game, started a game and got decently far. Now I can´t play anymore. And after fiddling around with OracleVM I now can´t even make the damn shared folder show up again.

Kinda sad, the game is pretty great and there is no decent successor as far as I´m aware.

Is it normal to be only on small screen? it tells me it is rinning on 8bit so maybe that is the problem?
Oh this is dumb....Why bother buying this game from Gog if you pretty much have to get a windows XP or Windows 98 machine to run it? Why not just get the original game from Ebay, or download an ISO of it? You have to run the dumb thing in a Virtual machine anyway........

WHAT IS THE POINT OF GOG WHEN YOU NEED A WINDOWS 98 machine to run the d--mn thing anyway?

They F--ed this one up.
I'm not sure how much progress has been made with this but a cheeky google for "Gangsters Organised Crime Windows 10" gave me this

https:/ /github.com/elishacloud/dxwrapper/wiki/Gangsters-Organized-Crime

On first boot up buttons now have words, the strange lag appears to be gone. Will post progress report after a few weeks.

No VM required.

This patch works to get the game started. But within the menus the mouse position is mismatched. After starting a game (by keyboard or trying to hit the buttons "blind) the mouse position is fixed to the left top.
After applyng the patch supplied by stu the menu started working, however when playing the game the fps would drop to 1. so I also did this reg-edit fix

mikedejong2708: Hi guys.
I have Win10 64bit installed and the game actually does function as installed without any special actions needed. Just launch the game from the "gangsters.exe" file in the game directory (usually found under c:\GOG Games\Gangsters\).

However I did experience some lag/delay issues to which I found a 'partial' fix for on this forum (Thanks to user Treatid):
1) Run regedit.exe
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/AppCompatFlags/Layers
3) You should see an entry for Gangster.exe. Double click it to edit it.
4) Replace the entry currently in it with
"$ DWM8And16BitMitigation 8And16BitTimedPriSync 8And16BitAggregateBlts Layer_ForceDirectDrawEmulation"
(remove the quotes)

(Original thread: "does_not_work_in_windows_8")

The Menu's are still not visible. But alt-tabbing out of the game will make the text show (may crash computer though, so write it down).

So far so good..

I NEED HELP THOUGH. I wrote 'partial' fix to the delay issue because I am still experiencing delay whenever the map (roof top) view is displayed when giving orders and when in working week - no difference. Its frustrating and unfortunately it gets worse during the game.

Any one know how to fix this?

I tried:
* Disabling Vertical Sync in Geforce GTX 560
* Disabling mouse precision
* Disabling/reducing administrator rights
* Kill-explorer "fix" (fyi. not needed with the above regedit fix)

I hope someone can help :)

Best regards,
Walther
The game runs smooth, the menu is still blanked out but you can easily google images of the menu screens to see what the buttons are. However I now have another dilemma, the game runs SO smooth that the speed up buttons always go to the "skip day" speed and normal and never anything in-between meaning that somethings a firefight can occur without you having ever seen it. If someone finds a way to rebind the game speeds to scroll wheel or something easier please tell.
Some guy made this patch which makes the game work smoothly for me on Win10.
Can't post links, so google "elishacloud Gangsters Organized Crime".

This worked, but for me the once you're playing the realtime part everything is paused regardless of how fast or slow you make the clock.

This seems to work for me as well, menus appear now to finally give it a play.

Once you're in the realtime part of the game is it paused or does it play like it should?

I wish I knew how to program because I'd turn this game into an open source game on the level of openttd.
