Finally got this working as well. Nvidia 950M, Windows 10, though I've set the game to use the default onboard intel graphics setup as that seems to be a reccuring problem here.

The patch and regedit note on the first page worked to get things to start. To fix the missing text, I had to then run in XP SP2 compatibility mode.

With the patch I can get the game running, but only on my monitor plugged directly into my graphics card. I have a CRT connected through a usb to vga converter, but that external graphics card (or the game) gives me the error that it's unable to access the ddraw file, and as others have mentioned, even changing quite a few settings, there's no way I've found to get the game running in Windowed mode via DXWnd.

Wow. How come I am just now finding out about this WineD3D? Beautiful. Thats all i needed (although i did hex edit the patch.dll from ddraw to ddfuk and therefore, needed to change the ddraw.dll file from the wined3d to ddfuk. Delightful!

I used to use the BAT. file fix,but even that doesn't work for me anymore.

I have the 'no text in menu' problem.I have tried eriedlinger's solution but no luck for me.

I have the CD & GOG version.

Okay sorry to bring up an old thread,but i have an AMD card and i can't see anywhere in the RadeonSoftware's menu that has a g-sync option.

I have and AMD FreeSync option,but that doesn't help with the missing text in Gangsters menu.

I'll get get this game fixed if it kills me!.

I come with good news,i finally managed to get the menu text working in this game.Here's how i did it.

1. Download this the file from this website
https://www.filehosting.org/file/details/945567/gang1v14crk.zip.

And this website as well https://gfx.wiretarget.com/gangsters.htm.You want the Gangsters v1.4/US/UK [14 KB] NoCD Patch.

2. Unpack it to your Gangsters directory(where the Gangsters.exe is located),and run the file.Once it has finished both files can be deleted.

3. I am running my Gangsters.exe shortcut with Windows 7 compatabillty mode.

4. And run Gangsters,but now with menu text!.

I still have the 3 files from the https://github.com/elishacloud/dxwrapper/wiki/Gangsters-Organized-Crime.Kept them in there just in case.

I hope this helps others like me who have struggling getting this game to work properly.

As maybe the first person to post about this general issue back in 2012 I'm glad to say your link to the directions worked for me (on Windows 10). Honestly, the mystery of why GoG would sell a broken game and how one might fix it is has always been more interesting to me than the game itself.

Will I ever really play this game? Not likely. Am I glad I can clear this mystery out of my mind? 100%.

I was able to get this game running using the fix from elishacloud / dxwrapper on github

The menu displayed text correctly but in-game I ran into an issue where the screen would not "update" properly. See screenshot attached(only a small area where the mouse cursor was moving would update).

I tried various fixes, including varoius regedit options, but I could not get it all to work(I would either loose text in menus but in-game would run normal, or have the menu texts show normal but ingame would be as before).

The fix that eventually worked for me was:
1. Download and install the fix from elishacloud / dxwrapper on github
2. Edit dxwrapper.ini - line 29: DDrawCompat20 = 1 (default value is 0)
3. Start the game


My system:
AMD 3700X
MSI X570 TOMAHAWK
Gigabyte 2070 Super
Windows 10 19043.1151


Gangsters also runs on my laptop. All I had to do was to download and install the fix from elishacloud / dxwrapper on github(can't post the link) and then run the game. I did not edit dxwrapper.ini to get it to run properly, it was working all along
