I have been noticing a large amount of crackling and pops during Gabriel Knight. Is this due to dosbox emulation or are there just sound quality issues with the original recordings?

I've been looking for the answer to this on the forums, and while the problem is mentioned briefly I haven't found a post stating one way or another. Can anyone with the original cd's please confirm that there are problems with the recordings?

Finally found a thread that answers my question. Too bad that the sound quality cannot be improved.

I found that after setting the cycles to a specific number (say, 20000), I didn't hear any crackling or popping. Mine is in the directory c:\Program Files(x86)\GOG.com\Gabriel Knight\dosboxGK, but YMMV.

Anyway, it's a text configuration file that can be opened with Notepad, and it has all of the Dosbox configurations, including how many CPU cycles the game does. I think the default is max, but you can change it.

I'm not sure why changing the cycles made the music less of an earsore for me, but it might do the same for you.

Thanks for the information. I will try it later, hopefully it will help. Would be nice not to hear the crackling or popping anymore.
