Greetings!
I already have some sound-trouble with Gabriel Knight 2 and now Gabriel Knight 3 wants me to "Please Insert CD1" right after I try to launch the game. What to do?
I'm happy at least Gabriel Knight 1 is playable :-)
Best regards,
Chris

Yeah, I agree, playing on my netbook also. Its not a HUGE deal, but its still something I think they should work on patching, as mine has a small HD, dont like extras, this isnt really 100% solved yet.
Definitely not solved. Just started happening to me.

I just submitted a ticket. I'm not running it on a netbook, I do have an optical drive, and I have been successfully running the game for weeks without seeing this prompt.

The only thing I can conceive of that's changed is that I have a different CD in the drive than I did when I installed it (and switching back to the old one didn't help...I doesn't like the Silent Hill CD any better than the Bioshock one, I'm afraid).

Well, I guess I can go play Silent Hill...
Hmm. Well, upon further inspection, my optical drive IS missing. It's not being recognized by the system at the moment.

So, at least the cause of this issue is consistent. Good to know.

Just a bump to say that some people may have an issue with "power-saving" notebooks in addition to systems without an ODD. I have a Lenovo Z575. I didn't realize it, but it disables the optical drive whenever it is empty by default. Thanks to this thread, I was able to troubleshoot and enable the ODD, but I would have been SOL otherwise. It's a shame the CD check can't be removed, but I'm sure it's deep in the game's code, since the issue isn't that it's actually looking for a CD, but that it's looking for a CD DRIVE.
I just got this problem also. This is NOT solved.
I also have this problem, and I've installed the game on a Mac using Wineskin Winery.

Installing Virtual CloneDrive into the Wineskin doesn't solve the problem for me.

Hello, I'm getting the same problem here too. Any solution ?
I am getting this issue as well. What's the solution?
Hi,
i bought GK3 today and got the same error right after i start the game.
my pc has physical 1 dvd drive and 1 virtual dvd drive installed. (i never had problems with other gog games, abour 20 games tested on this machine)

is there someone from gog with any idea on this?
I have this same problem as well on my Dell Laptop, which is strange since my PC does have a CDROM drive. I did try the virtual clone drive program and it didn't work for me. I tried all the suggestions listed in the "Read First troubleshooting" section and still the same "Please Insert CD 1" message. I did do some research and I read on another site that this could be due to "Registry issues" and there is an experimental installer that might fix the issues; however, it only works if you have the actual game on CD already since it requires it and combines the multiple CDs into one file. Therefore, it's not compatible with the GOG version.

I sent a ticket to GOG and they basically told me to do the same things listed in this forum (including the use of the VCD program). They also said that they haven't heard about this happening to people and that it was 'strange'... I guess some of us are just going to be SOL unless we buy the physical game :(
Not solved for me, either. Should not have to install 3rd party software to play a "DRM free" game.

This is an issue and failure to resolve this will hamper future purchasing decisions on my part, as I see this as a caveat against GoG (a service that I had previously thought impeccable).

This effectively renders the game unplayable and me disappointed.
I'm raising my hand as well.

Played GK 1&2 with no problem.
Wanted to roll right into 3 and it demands that I "Insert Disc 1".
Searching the internet to install some crap add-on is not going to happen.
What are you guys doing to fix this???
Yeah, this is definitely not solved. I did a default install from gog and the first time I ran it, it worked perfectly. I saved my game and tried to go back in a few days later and got the "please insert cd1" issue. This really needs to be sorted out...
OK guys I found a solution that worked for me. I got a no-cd crack for the game from gamecopyworld ... just google search for it

I placed it in the ../GOG Games/Gabriel Knight 3 folder and replaced the original GK3.exe with this one. I then ran the new .exe with compatibility for window xp service pack 3, and it is now working.

I still find it ridiculous that I had to resort to doing this as Gog should have fixed this issue or at the very least supplied a solution to this problem, as it looks like people have been having problems with this game for a few years. Gog are still a quality site, but they have clearly messed up here.

Actually, you are completely wrong. This is solved for the OP.

Oh, you mean you have a different issue. For all of you still having problems you each need to contact support, if you haven't already. They may know of a solution/workaround for your particular case. It may also help GOG identify what the problem is to begin with.
