Game runs fine, but the sound is very bad, especially the voices. A terrible "sparkly" or "electric" sound lies on top of the voices, and it doesn't sound good. It's not the speakers, I have tried several.
Does anyone else have the same problem?

Gremmi: The credit music is digital music - everything up to that point is midi.

Ok, so it's only the digital music that's distorting. What can be the reason for that?
I get this too. Very annoying. :(

It's the dialogue for me. The intro had garbled voices, so I quit, since I'm not sure what to do. The dialogue will be happening, then there will be some weird noise that blurts out dialogue.
I get it too. There's a pause and then some garbled dialogue that sounds like a lot of words spoken very fast. My guess is that we need to fiddle with the "speed" of DosBox.
i have a light "electric" distortion with the voices sometimes as well. i wouldn't consider it very annoying, but if there is a way to make it perfect i would certainly be interested to know :D
I have the same problem, regardless of DOSBOX speed. Sound will pop and crackle randomly.
pkt-zer0 had the following solution in in the announcement thread, you could try that:
Doubling the sample rate in the DOSbox config seems to have helped with that for me.

To do this, you need to edit the file "dosboxGK.conf" in the Installation folder. Find the line
rate=22050
in the category "[mixer]" and change it to
rate=44100

If that does not work you could try increasing
prebuffer=10
and
blocksize=2048
to a higher value (doing this will increase sound lag, though, but that's not so important in an adventure game as it is in an action game).

Thanks for all the suggestions anyway.

One last thing to try if you're desperate to play the game (though this is a bit of a lengthy process):
Browse to the installed folder
Find the file GK1.gog.
Open this in WinRAR and extract all the files to a directory (say C:\GK1)
Download and run the GK1XP installer from http://gkpatches.vogons.zetafleet.com/
Point the installer to the GK1 directory.
This will then install the Windows version for you, which should avoid any DOSBox sound conflicts.

Gremmi: Point the installer to the GK1 directory.

How do I do this?
Ah, I just tried it myself and the GK1XP installer's been updated since last time I used it so it only works off a CD. You'll have to burn the extracted files to a CD, then run the installer.

This fix, along with the prebuffer and blocksize increase, didn't completely stop the dialogue distortion (as others have said, it sounds like a few words will jumble together) or the popping but it's a little better now.
It's especially strange since I don't have the jumbling dialogue issue with any other Sierra talkie games in DOSBOX.

I worked on this problem on my system for a long time, and i found a solution.
Try setting the soundblaster from sb1 to sb16 in the dosbox config file.

Didn't work for me either.

This worked partially for me. Now the music is fine, and although the voices are better, they still have some popping and crackling.
Thanks.
Edit:
I marked your answer as solution, even though it didn't work for everybody, and it didn't solve the problem entirely.
