Hello.
After beating the game in normal once (after a luckier gamethrough than usual) and not being able to repeat the deed again, I wonder: can this game be mastered or it depends too much in luck?
I mean, I wonder is there exist some skilled players who manage to win most of the times, or at least not losing 9 out of 10.
Yes it can, i've unlocked all ships and all but one alternate, and haven't lost a game in a while.
Definitely, I'd say at least 75% win rate minimum with any ship is possible. Starting ship and it's B version can be won virtually every time. The key is minimizing mistakes. The fewer mistakes, the less scrap wasted on repairs, the stronger your ship gets. This leads to even less scrap loss as your ship overpowers all the enemies. And sector by sector the upward spiral of uberness culminates in dropping the boss before he even knows what hit him.

Conversely, if you take a lot of unnecessary damage, you are now buying repairs with scrap instead of necessary upgrades to weapons and shields and other systems, leading to a weaker ship that has a harder time breaking the enemy. As such, the enemy does more damage leading to more scrap lost on more repairs. And the downward spiral of failure ensues.

Yes, I get that. But for example in lots of my gamethroughs almost all the ships I encounter are equipped with missiles, since sector 1, so it is very difficult to avoid taking damage. Upgrading engines help, but it is not enough, and I can buy the drone control hoping I will find the defense drone, but sometimes it just does not appear until it is too late.

Cloaking is also helpful, so that's three things right there. And of course aiming for their guns, or sending a boarding party to the guns.
It's also important to learn how to spend your scraps. At the beginning I was doing like this: "Crap! My hull is at 50% but phew, here is the store, I'll repair it!". Huge waste of scraps! Some time later I realized: why should I care? I can still survive several (sometimes even a dozen or so) encounters and perhaps I'll meet a repair station where I can fix my ship much cheaper or, which is obviously better, rescue aforementioned repair station from a pirate and get a free repair. It's just one tiny example... if you spend your scraps properly your chances for winning the game will be much, much higher.

Obviously there are other important aspects, some users have mentioned several of them. So the answer is yes, FTL can be mastered.
First off, yes, the small missiles will get off before you an take down their guns. Those do 1 or 2 damage. If you build your ship up correctly, you get hit by at most 2 shots before you take down their weapons. The 3 and 4 damage ones have such a long firing time, you should be able to drop their weapons before they get off a shot. At worst, 1 shot gets off before you drop the enemy weapons.

I generally don't send my boarding party to the guns, instead I send it to the shields which the computer AI takes as a high priority target. They will often even pull the pilot from the cockpit to defend the shields. When this happens the ship has very little dodge, so your weapons are even more effective in disabling the enemy weapons.
Definitely, the more you play, the less mistakes you make, and all my losses are due to my mistakes, after each round I analyze what I did wrong.
I am getting the hang of it. Buying the teleporter early makes you earn a lot of scrap, giving you an edge.
I would say that although you can win at FTL, it is not able to be won through technical competence. I have realised this through many playing hours. I would probably have as much game time as anyone on this page (my first game was "Asylum"), and after trying numerous times to get the Rock ship alternative, i would say that this game is, at best, random, and, at worst, malevolent. Even in real life situations you have the real opportunity of experience. This game nullifies that skill set. If you choose Rock Cruiser, you are automatically handicapped. There are definitely less number of opportunities as with other races. It is racist! The resources are literally removed. Programmers, wake up! We are sophisticated enough to work through your logic trees. It is LAZY programming. Get YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!

Have you not read any of the other threads about how to master the game?
Not to mention that the rock cruisers are some of the easiest ships around, I had my best scores with them and really have to make serious mistakes to lose with those.

Are you equally good with both? I find the B to be much easier to win with. Possibly the easiest in the game. B is one of the easiest variants to get though, thankfully.

At least you've got them unlocked :S
Getting rock A is a matter of luck, but it's a common enough encounter. I got it on my first play-through after reinstalling the game. It's not that difficult, either. You don't even have to defeat the ship, you just survive until it jumps.

Unlocking B just takes firing off both of your missiles at once until a ship with a defense drone dies for the 'defense drones don't do anything' achievement, then for the other one you just throw a bunch of fire bombs onto the enemy ship and transport over and kill him.
