Seriously it seems like a minor niggle, but this has been going on for years. Every bloody space flight sim that gets advertised as something along the lines of 'Elite' or 'Privateer' and I start getting excited expecting an immersive, sandbox space epic and I get a goddamned arcade shooter.
Fine, I understand there's plenty of leet pwners out there who will cut everything off that doesn't help them to 'win' and the first to go is immersion, but still am I completely unique in enjoying the feel of actually sitting in the thing I'm flying?
Privateer 1 and X-wing were the last ones to do this right. Privateer 2 I bought, played and just went bleh... it just didn't have the atmosphere of number 1 and just felt like an arcade game. So we go down the line. Eve Online, the new Jumpspace Evolution (MMO) no cockpit view. I check out Darkstar 1 on here, yay, cockpit view.. oh, it's about as shallow as a potplant and has no trading or cargo hauling. etc.
Finally we reach Freespace... great game, no bloody cockpit view. All the mods for Freelancer including the most excellent Beyond the Red Line, no cockpit.
A minute ago I saw a link to X3: Reunion that somebody mentions has all the depth and immersion I'm looking for. A bit of research.. oh, nope, it's just an arcade shooter as well, no friggin cockpit view.
Seriously, what is the problem? Is it that hard to implement?
Can anybody direct me to a space sim that has the following:
1. Freeform travel where you want to travel and explore ala Privateer/Elite.
2. Trading / fighting/ piracy or at least 2 of those.
3. Ability to pilot different ships, from fighters to heavy haulers.
4. Preferably as little automating as possible. I want to dock the sucker myself. I want to take off on my own etc.
5. and lastly A FRIGGIN COCKPIT VIEW!
Anyone? Beuler?
