I've never heard of the drone escaping before. Do you mean it's actually jumping out?

Yes it does when fired few shots it will jump out and i get a main objective failure and have to do it again
Are you shooting the instructor rather than the drone? BTW is this FS1 or FS2?

YES, I do. I have tried it 5-6 times with no success. Although the tutorial says to hit as many as you can, the mission fails even if you miss just one. It's really frustrating. So I quit Freespace 1 and moved on to another game.

If you have Freespace 2, try the FSO mod with the FS1 campaign, I played through it a couple of weeks ago and didn't have any problems with the tutorial.

There is a skip training button on the briefing screen.

You're the first person I've ever heard of 'failing' basic training.
Being bored of basic training - that's a regular complaint. Failing, though?
I'd be interested in seeing a recording of you playing.. just out of sheer curiosity...

If you ever try again, try to be a bit more visceral in flying style. Be aggressive, and shoot the crap outta stuff.

What can I say? Evidently I'm a lousy pilot...
But surely I'm not the only one with the same problem (we're two already in this thread - the guy on the first post and me).

So, what went wrong in the mission? Here is what:
On the 3rd stage of the training, you have to shoot down drones that approach you in pairs. They must have been 5-6 pairs in total. The problem is that each pair stays on sight very briefly and while you fight with one pair, the next one arrives. Thus, if you pick them in the wrong order (i.e. fight with a drone of the next pair without having shut down both of the previous pair), the remaining drone manages to escape through the portal. And that's it! Mission fail.

My curiosity's piqued. How long did it take for you to take a drone down the first time, when you get your guns online?
Actually, I had some trouble with the training too. When I originally played the game it was easy. Now the Joystick control is way harder. I actually got rid of my Pacific AV8or and got a different joystick. Its better now, but still nowhere near as easy to control as it used to be. I don't think its just me sucking either, because modern games control fine. Its just that I cant seem to balance the sensitivity on Freespace. Its like it scales weird or something.

Yeah, I gave up on playing FreeSpace with a joystick. Even with the lowest sensitivity settings and minimal deadzone the game is basically unplayable to me. There are definitely better joysticks than mine (heck, in the 90's the cheapest joysticks I ever bought were better than most modern mid-range sticks :P) but the fact that even with my gamepad (which has almost no deadzone of its own and works fine with ANY other game out there, including other flight sims) I can't hit shit, convinced me that this game simply shouldn't be played with a stick. The deadzone and sensitivity are simply still too large/high on minimal settings. The devs really screwed this up.

So I switched to mouse controls and the game works perfectly fine. Of course it's sometimes a bit exhausting when you're trying to hit a nearby enemy who just keeps circling around you but the mouse aiming allows for perfectly precise aiming at medium to long range. When I really can't keep up with a nearby enemy I just slow down to build up some distance.

So yeah, FreeSpace 1, totally not a joystick game IMO (sadly).
IMO it's an issue with the stick input curvatures. There was some work done in one of the FSOpen branches to mod it in but I'm not sure if those changes made it into the main release branch. Personally it took some time for me to adjust to using a stick but I haven't felt any issues since.
