Anybody else getting any performance problems? I'm running:
Vista 64
3.0Ghz Intel Dual Core
Nvidia 8800GT
Soundblaster X-Fi
and am receiving pretty spotty performance, but only in certain instances. Specifically, it seems that whenever I initially look at anything with a lightsource (be it a ship, a laser beam, or even a background item like a star), the game gets really choppy. Once the object has been viewed once though, the framerate stabilizes and runs smooth, at least until another wave of ships jumps in. Some of the bigger battles that have tons of ships constantly jumping in/out, firing lasers, and blowing up, makes it almost impossible to line up a shot.
A frustrating problem... Anybody else having this issue (particuarly under Vista with an 8800GT)? And more importantly, anybody found a fix? :)

Yes, I'm getting exactly the same thing with FP2, smooth until you look at a light-source, then choppy as heckfire. Irksome. I'm running it on:
XP Home
Athlon XP 3000+
nVidia 7600 GS
Any ideas anyone?
I'm having the exact same issue. My system is pretty much the same as GTLC's:
XP Pro
Athlon XP 3000+
nVidia 7600GS
1GB RAM
I'll probably be reinstalling my graphics driver this weekend in attempt to fix the freezing issue noted in this thread
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/Freespace_Series/freespace_1_graphics_freeze/1
I'll report back if that helps this issue as well. Otherwise, between the freezing and the spotty performance, I'm glad this was my free one. Very disappointing :(
Right. Got a fix, of sorts.
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/3.6.9.rar
Go to that url, download the file and unzip everything into your GOG/Freespace 2 directory in Program Files (only a 7 mb download). Run the new launcher and select the FS_open_3.6.9 exe. From there you can choose the settings you'd like and the game then runs beautifully!
These files represent the first bits of the Open Source Freespace project. From here you can get upgraded textures, new vid files and all sorts of other goodies, as described better in other threads. :)
I'm off to give the game a thorough testing!

I appreciate you posting that GTLC. I've played with the Open Source mod in the past, and it's impressive work they're doing. Ultimately though, I'm hopeful that someone (either another user or a GOG representative) can find a solution to get the original games up and running right. Between yours, mine, and opnickc's PCs, there's not a lot of common denominators. Our OS's are different, our proccessor's and RAM is different, but our graphics cards are all relatively current Nvidia models... I've tried running a variety of different drivers from Nvidia (all the official releases, and many of the betas) to see if an older driver may work better, but so far no luck. If I had to guess though, the problem lies with our Nvidia chipsets.

Parent poster got it.
freespace2 went from being unplayable at any setting to being smooth at the highest settings.
Wonderful top, thanks!

I can also confirm that this fixed my problems as well
For those not wanting to use the FSOpen port, I believe I may have found an alternative. I downloaded a Glide Wrapper (allows a graphics card to emulate an older 3dfx based card) from here:
http://dege.freeweb.hu/
Specifically, the v1.40+ release. If you download this file, unzip it, and then copy the following files:
dgVoodooSetup.exe
Glide.dll
Glide2x.dll
to your Program FilesGOG.comFreespace 2 (or Freespace) directory, then run the launcher application (ie FreeSpace.exe or FreeSpace2.exe), and have it autodetect your graphics card, it should detect the 3dfx Glide option, allowing you to run the game, 3D accelerated, but without the choppy framerate that Direct3D provides.
I've found a new fix for this problem that doesn't involve using a Glide wrapper. There are actually a set of registry tweaks that help Nvidia cards run the game properly. I've tested them in both Freespace 1 and 2, and they seem to work perfectly. To make sure they were put in a centralized location, I created a new thread called:
"Fix For Choppy Graphics (FS1 & FS2) on Nvidia Cards"
In the GOG Freespace forums.
Hi,
Maybe there is a problem with multicore cpus. I know some old-ish games (circa 98) have problems on the new processors. To solve this, at least partly, you can try setting affinity to one core/processor.

Hi ,
I am trying to fivx the yellow screen crashby installing the open fs2 deal. It keeps saying it can't find the al32.exe or something file? any clues?

I tried that and when I tried to open the file in the launcher I got an error saying it failed because openAL32 was not found. What's the deal with that?
OpenAL is a Creative Labs (maker of the Soundblaster line of sound cards) sponsored initiative to create a platform for many different soundcards to use the same protocol, and theoretically make the sound development of game design easier. You can download the OpenAL package here:
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx
It should work on any soundcard, whether or not it was made by Creative Labs.

Thank you for that, this was also my problem and now everything is perfect..
