I installed the game to D:/games/GOG.com/Freespace 2/ on a XP PRO machine.
I click on FS2.exe, a message pop up saying
"Please configure your system in the Launcher before running FS2
The Launcher will now be started!"
I click OK, a error message pop up to say
"Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!"
Any ideas how I can solve this?
thanks

I just re-installed and it worked for me. I don't know what went wrong the first time. I didn't install Open Source or anything and it worked. I even destroyed the Ravana :) This game is awesome!

Just got the game. I got my brother to buy it on his account and then we transferred the files to my computer. No matter what I do I get told to do setup, but then cannot press apply, and if I click on OK then I get told that the game cannot be run from a drive root directory. I have played the first Freespace game and I really want to get this to work. Any suggestions anybody? I am using Windows 7.

what suggestions in this thread have you tried?

if all else fails, you can try the last solution proposed which is Freespace Open and I'd recommend doing so anyway - you put the nice, new open source engine over your FS2 assets and you're essentially playing FS2 as designed for modern graphics and hardware. Very pretty, fewer bugs. That said, you shouldn't need to do this (though it is nice) since the game does, in general, work on modern computers ...
