It's taken awhile but it was worth it :)

Im surprised (and somewhat sad) that noone mentioned "Colony Wars" yet. It made me forget everything else in the space-shooter genre when it was released in 1997. Still nothing stands up to that triology.
But tbh I havent played Freespace2 yet (only glanced at it). its buyed, downloaded & installed, only thing thats missing is some time to play it (and figure out how to optimally map controls to my gamepad). I will consider it my mission to play FS2 soon, then find my copy of Colony wars and play that again aswell to reasses my statement.
I'll second all the games mentioned above, but how about instead of space, oceans? Specifically, I'm talking about Subwar 2050. Microprose's answer to Wing Commander didn't have the story or characters of its space-based cousin, but it did have a very open environment to explore, inhabited by enemy subs, friendlies, and even giant whales, squid, and other sea creatures!

I actually kind of remember that game... I tried it out, don't remember much about it. It's basically space combat except you have the ocean floor you can run into, otherwise it's pure 3-d.
I have never tried Independence War 1 or 2.
Would buy both if they came here.

Now that someone mentioned it, I can also recommend two great games: Archimedean Dynasty and its sequel, Aquanox. Both take place underwater, but while AD is more tactical and about putting your sub to the max with its multiple turrets and whatnot, Aquanox is an eye-candy (still looking great), fun shooter... with some of the most horrible voice actors I've ever heard.
If any of these have already been mentioned, I apologize, the thread is TLDR. These are the space combat/sim games that I have found to be both similar to and as enjoyable as Freespace:
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
X-Com Interceptor
Terminus
Freelancer
Darkstar One

Ouch. Those games are all over the map.
The combat space sims are the X-Wing Series up to Alliance, the Freespaces, and the Wing Commanders. There are a few others throughout the 90s but those are the big three.
On the more "realistic" end of pure combat space sims are the two Independence War games.
Freelancer, while not a bad game, is nothing like the above. It's a mouse-controlled action space shooter with some trading and upgrade elements. Darkstar One is a watered-down version of Freelancer, which makes it very weak sauce indeed.
Terminus was an aberration from Vicarious Visions, who promptly went to console development after this game. It's basically Yet Another Attempt At Elite, only with IW-style physics.
The X3 games are glacially-paced entrepreniural space sims that aren't really fish or fowl. The key words here are "glacially-paced"
X-Com Interceptor isn't even worth mentioning.
Somebody mentioned AD and Aquanox. These aren't half-bad "space sims in the ocean" but the ysuffer from the usual Euroware roughness.
Doc Smart's latest BC games (Universal Combat series) aren't half-bad either, but they suffer from the good dokker's "vision".

Rob2984: Anyone interested in looking for the old X-Wing series might be interested to know that they were re-released as the X-Wing collectors series a while back, upgraded to run on the X-Wing VS TIE Fighter engine... I think it was for windows 95/98, but I'm not sure.

Aedwynn: I actually have that - it doesn't use the XW vs. TF engine - but you *do* get an XW/TF demo on the disc.
I can confirm that it works just fine with XP, if anyone sees it available.
On my copy the TIE fighter files were corrupted, so I could only play X-Wing. :-(
I quickly discovered how unforgivingly HARD X-Wing is.

There is a fix for the Tie Fighter problem assuming you havn't got the correct version of directx installed.
Its a registry exe available from the Lucasarts support site.

Freespace wins by having a better AI, a couple of gameplay elements Colony Wars lacks, and joystick support.
But that's not to say Colony Wars is a bad game. My own top 3 favourite spacesims are FS2, I-War2 and Colony Wars1, in that order.
Darkstar One, Freelancer, Starlancer, X Series, Dark Horizon.
Colony Wars (Playstation)
Freelancer (Xfire said that I played nearly 4000 hours :°( )
I was disappointed by SpaceForce2: Rouge Universe, but I am hoping a bit for JumpGate: Evolution

Rob2984: Also, AngelKnight, what's the deal with the hostility to TIE Fighter on the original as opposed to XWvTF engine? I was of the understanding that it was just a graphical improvement, is that not the case?

McDondo: There was little differences between the original versions and the collector's edition, but for those who fell in love with the original games those little things meant a whole lot.
For instance, the soundtrack in the collectors edition was a straight out Star Wars OST, where in the original game it was an adaptive piece, made to burst out in a crescendo when the most frantic battles took place, your reinforcements arrived or some critical craft got blown out of space.
All of us old gamers know that back then there was little difference in wich video card you'd got, but your SOUND CARD made all the difference, so attention to in game music was a high ranking piece in a game's review.
Another issue was with the general portrait of missions, where some of the original XWing tours got "dumbed down" due to its increased difficulty, wich of course took away some of the challenge in beating those rebellion-like "wing of A-wings against 3 corvettes w/ fighter escort + star destroyer on its way". In fact, I remember me and some friends used to hate Admiral Ackbar for making such deranged battle plans, but as we grew older it dawned on us that we were the rebellion, undermanned, overwhelmed and fighting "dirty" with guerrilla-like tactics.
So, it's kinda understandable that the Collector's Edition was not quite the same as loading up doxbox and having a blast with those wacky polygons, but the graphical update was welcomed by those who didn't get the chance to play them back when they were kings of all space sims
I don't know if anyone agrees about this, so I would like to read some thoughs on this subject
Cheers!

I'll also add that the Collector's series removed alot of the little cutscenses such as showing your battle damaged xwing in the hanger after a battle being repaired by R2. Also
The collectoer's Series also removed the ability to use other player pilots as wingmen. For example, In the original X-wing and the Collector's CD-Rom version you could use the "Top Ace" pilot as a wingman, whereas you can only play as the "Top Ace" pilot in the Collector's Series version.
I was also a fan of the dynamic iMuse MIDI soundtrack as opposed to the looped redbook audio soundtrack from the Collector's series.

I have to throw my support behind TIE Fighter as well. Is there any better feeling than when you were flying the TIE Defender as Darth Vader's wingman and totally emasculating him by stealing all his kills?
I think not.
