After destroying all enemy wings and the enemy capital ship (SD Tantalus) while keeping the GTD Bastion alive, the mission does not advance. I tried time compression waiting 2 hours mission-time, nothing more happens. The Bastion rotates around in space and does nothing.
Tried on Difficulty Level "Very Easy". System Specs: AMD Phenom II X4 810, 8 GB RAM, nVidia 9600 GT 512 MB running Windows XP x64

If you don't destroy the SD Tantalus and just complete the rest of the mission you should be able to avoid this bug.

Hmm, the Screenshot is missing the HUD. Completed all objectives including keeping the Bastion over 35 %. Tantalus intact. Nothing more happens. If I warp out at this time, debriefing says the Bastion was destroyed and mission failed.

Are you considering getting or already own freespace2? If so then maybe you should install freespace open and import the free space 1 missions into that. Alot of people claim its alot less buggy and makes the game run better so maybe it will solve this bug as well. You can also get graphical upgrades for the game if you wish.

No, i did not consider playing another game named FSPort, because it changes gameplay as well, makes some missions harder and others easier.
I think Freespace 1 should be finishable by its own.

Perhaps try following the Notes section of the walkthrough for a quick easy win and hope that whatever bug it is thats causing you to not be able to complete this mission triggers sometime during the mission and you avoid it this way. If not then I have no idea whats causing it.

I tried both strategies and my own (using light bombers for alpha loaded with Phoenix and Interceptors, Ulysseus with Interceptors for beta wing). My own works much better than the Valkyrie suggestion. The result of the all heavy bomber strategy is very random.
There seems to be something more messed up than just a trigger. Gamma wing does not appear at all. All enemy wings fly one attack at the Bastion and then get disoriented, drifting around in space, colliding with the Bastion etc.
I will try installing FS to another machine, although all missions before this worked fine.
Do any of your ships carry disrupters?
Not sure how this is done (I have an old computer), but perhaps try making your OS use only 1 processor.

No, only Prometheus and Avenger.
I tried Freespace on a Atom N270 machine. There the afterburner works out of the box (CPU seems to be slow enough) The mission doesn't work there nevertheless.

I'm impressed that you're still looking for the solution after more than a year, hah.

I think you should just get Freespace 2 + FS2open + FSport.

AFAIK the gameplay is not changed, the mod team were committed to keeping the game's integrity, and you will be treating your eyes to fantastic graphic updates.
There is a way around this bug but it can get.... messy. If you want the nitty-gritty details, I can post them. Involves installing again elsewhere, opening up .vp files, and replacing a mission. It can be done however.

On a side note, did you have the same issue with Paving the Way and A Failure to Communicate? This mission and Failure annoyed the living shit outta me. (Let's have a 2.1km long ship hit a 1m waypoint dead-on!!)
That's very strange. I've recently completed the latest Freespace Port 3.2 walkthrough and didn't encounter a single bug in both Great War and Silent Threat campaigns.

He's playing retail version.
He should try FSport then. Though I've never seen this bug in retail FS1 as well.
