In this mission one can scan Eva and Lucifer from the distance. You just need to target them as soon as they jump in and follow them while the on-board computer will do the scan. So you don't need to keep a 150 m distance to scan Eva and Lucifer.

I'm not at my own 'puter at the moment, but I think Alt + S disabled subsystem scanning. Do that once you've targeted the Eva. When you're NOT targeting a specific subsystem, it is considerably easier to maintain the scanning, and you can scan from a longer distance (I think).
I encountered a nasty bug making this mission impossible in FSOpen.
Seems at least the cruisers and up require scanning to be done within range of a point at their front, rather than counting distance from the whole ship. This makes the second to last ship very hard to scan, and the last perhaps impossible.

I went back to normal, non-FSOpen Freespace 1 and am no longer having this problem. Scanning is easy now, though I still have not been able to survive jumping out :(

This not a bug, well, not technically.
You need to turn off auto sub-targeting (Alt + S). What happens is that instead of scanning the target, your ship tries to scan the subsystem, which, on the Eva and Lucy, could be more than a kilometre away from your position, even if you're next to the ship.

Auto sub-targeting is turned off by default on retail FS, which is why you are no longer encountering it.
Yes, you can just disable subsystem targeting to scan enemy capital ships from a distance in this mission. There is no need to switch back to retail FS.

I just got to this mission and played it couple times. I didn't realize you could divert power to your engines. I assume this depletes power from other things in your ship?

shields and weapons - shield and weapon energy won't replenish as quickly
