I just bought FS2 and downloaded the Beyond the Red Line demo, and I was wondering what is the best way to play the game, control wise. I have gone through the training on both games with mouse and keyboard, and then again with keyboard and number pad. Neither is too bad, but I was thinking I might get a joystick. Should I, or should I just stick with keyboard and mouse? I also didn't mean to post this question on the mod thread.

Well with any flight or space sim the best control is a joystick, that said the game is playable with a mouse/keyboard/keypad combo. However, as the difficulty level of the game increases, the control of a joystick is nicer. The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick is decent joystick for relatively cheap (just under $30). However, if this is the only space/flight sim game you're going to play and only going to play once, you must decide if the cost is worth it.

P.S. This is a good forum for this type of question, no need to apologize.

EDIT: Ah ... I see you posted this in the stickied thread about mods. Meh not a huge deal. :)

Thanks for the answer. i think I may play it for a while with keyboard and mouse. If it gets too difficult, I'll probably get a joystick. I was thinking of this one: http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-JI3G-Cyborg-Gold-JoyStick/dp/B000056Q0P

If I do get a joystick, I won't need a throttle too, will I? Cause FS2 is the only sim I'm planning on playing, so I don't want to get all this extra stuff if I don't really need it.

Last question: I know that the BTRL team split up and some are working on Diaspora. I've looked around, but I can't find much info on it. Is there a release date? Or is it even still worked on?

That looks like a decent joystick - you won't need an extra throttle, it looks like it has one.

The BTRL team did indeed split up with a large chunk forming Diaspora. Diaspora seems to still in very active development. Their plan is to release "episodes" - sets of missions in batches once the engine is done, rather than a demo and full release. This way they hope to release some of content sooner. They have not said what the release of the first batch will be. Their website is here: http://diaspora.hard-light.net/.

If you get interested in trying other space sims - Independence War 1 and 2 are cool and on GOG. They're only $6 each and if you get them on any kind of sale, I'd say it's definitely worth it to try at those prices. They're good games. They have a very different, full Newtonian based, flight engine from FS2 - so like BTRL .... but more so. :) Check 'em out: IWar1 and IWar2.
