Hi everyone. I just installed Freespace and Freespace 2 from gog (all vanilla). Freespace 1 launches with no problem. When I attempt to launch Freespace 2, I get a black screen and an error message from windows: FreeSpace has stopped working. Windows is looking for a solution...

I've tried running it as administrator and I've tried running it in compatibility mode for every operating system choice available. It always gives me this message. So you know, I am running on an Asus Eee PC with 1GB of ram, 1.6 Ghz atom processor and Windows 7 basic.

I have same problem. Freespace 1 works fine but freespace 2 doesn't work for me on my netbook. It installed but as soon as i go to play it, it just goes onto a black screen and says "freespace 2 has stopped working" any ideas? I'm using win7 home.

that looks..kinda complicated looking at that link. But nothing else I have tried works so might give it a go.

You might want to wait until the new FSO engine is released (soon) as it supposedly contains speed improvements which might be important for your netbook.

my netbook should handle it no prob. annoying because I know how good this game is.

cool - I've just heard some people's netbooks are not capable of handling FSO 3.6.12 - they don't have enough power to handle the new engine - 3.6.14 supposedly brings a lot of improvements to efficiency

thanks, I'm installing using that automated installer, I just selected everything... I would prefer to play it as it is from retail instead of all these mods and stuff (at least at first) especially as performance will probably be alot worse than retail with all the new graphics etc...but I'll be happy if it gets it to work.

I'm fairly certain it played fine when I played it on XP on my netbook but I can't remember exactly.

Anyway it's doing its update thing right now so will post back and let you know if it worked or not. I've got a feeling the same thing will happen but will see.

You're going to want to disable all of the MediaVPs except the core; they take WAY more power to use than a netbook is going to have.

yeah its ok luckily I've just switched to unlimited BB, so wont need to worry about a huge bill for going over a monthly limit lol..

how big is a complete install? it doesn't say the size..

10gb later.... IT WORKS!! I installed openAL and ran the game through the launcher and it plays. :)

Will this be the retail version that I'm playing until I add stuff? I just want to play the retail campaign, not bothered about user missions. To be honest I have no idea what that beast was I just installed. I don't know how you disable any of the "MediaVPs" but the game looks pretty and plays smooth though Ive only played some of the tutorial so yeah.. I guess will have to wait and see how performance is.

also theres a 3.6.12d and 3.6.12r I dont know if it matters which one I use..

Yup should be the retail campaign by default. :) I'm surprised it runs so smoothly on your netbook! That's awesome. I've heard complaints from people with dedicated GPUs and non-atom CPUs complain about framerates and stuttering. Out of curiosity, what are your specs?

I am not sure about the difference in the engines as I have the MacOSX versions, but based on what I have my guess would be that 3.6.12d is the debug engine and 3.6.12r is the release engine, so use r.

Well I have only tried the tutorial..my specs are pretty much standard netbook except for 2gb instead of 1. Atom N80, intel 945, 2gb, Win7 Home 32bit
