Hi,

I am trying to use my xbox one controller to play the original Freespace. I have been using Joy2Key to play other games without any problems. However Freespace hijacks the controller and overrides the Joy2Key settings.

I have tried disabling the joystick from the launcher. However the game then seems to ignore *all* input from the controller, including the inputs mapped to keyboard inputs via Joy2Key. I have also tried using GlovePie but I get the same results.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around this? I know a joystick is probably the ideal way to play the game but I don't want to have to buy one, and I'd like to try the game using a pad.

Thanks for your help!

Are you sure you need joy2key?
Isn't it better to map things with the in-game options?
Just be sure that the xbox xontroller is selected in the launcher.
Freespace doesn't override anything, when you bind a key to a controllerbutton in JoyToKey a buttonpress will register the binded key and the controllerbutton, it will do this in any game that uses controllerbuttons. This is a limitation of JoyToKey and maybe in Glovepie as well though I'm not familiar with the last program.

Like Det_Bullock said, it is better to configure the controller in the game or if you really want to use JoyToKey make sure to unbind all controllerbuttons within the game.

I have tried to bind the controller in game but it doesn't pick up any of the buttons I press. It won't pick up analog movements, triggers, buttons - nothing. The pad is definitely connected, I can play other games with it and see it responding in the windows calibrate program. And I have it selected in the FS1 launcher.
That's why I was trying to use Joy2Key and Glovepie.

Any other suggestions as to things I can try?

Make sure the Xbox controller is selected in the game launcher, it should work.
I installed Freespace 2 and it works as you described, except that it doesn't pick up the triggers. I can get around that with Joy2Key though.

I still can't get it to work with FS1. The behaviour is strange -I reinstalled FS1 and it is now picking up the pad in the options screen. For example I can bind the pitch axis to forward and back on the left analog. However once I go into the game itself it doesn't take any input from the analog sticks at all.

I'm going to try playing the FS1 port using the FS open mod. I have tried to sign up to the Hard Light forums but it thinks I'm a spammer and there is no email to contact the admin. Is there anyone on those forums here that could help me?

Thanks again

You should use the FSopen installer:

It makes things way easier.
