I've just installed the original Freespace. The intro ran perfectly fine, and then the ship interior/menu shows up. And the text is a bit distorted. Now, this isn't all the text, as viewing the options page seems to have the red text perfectly readable. But any dynamic text, such as things that popup in the menu, or can change due to actions I take, or text that appears in the briefings or during missions is all distorted. So I've checked through the other pages of the forum but I haven't seen anything quite fitting the bill. There's an issue about a similar problem for Freespace 2 way back on the 8th page involving adding a registry key, and being hopeful I tried it but nothing changed.
Some simple information: I'm running Vista, though the game is not installed in the Program Files directory. Even so, I tried Administrator mode and that didn't fix the text.
I'm hoping I'm not the only one that has seen this before.

I've played through the entire game, trying not to get too annoyed by it. Admittedly, this solution is "not ideal", but as a last recourse, at least it's a solution.
My assumption it would be fixed in FS2 turned out to be incorrect. Then I got frustrated enough to actually look for a solution and found . It's the same registry key you found on "[url=http://www.gog.com/en/forum/Freespace_Series/fix_for_unreadable_fonts_on_freespace_2]page 8", but it has a few more keys to add. I've just added all of them (sorry buddy, I was too lazy to try them one by one :p ) and started FS1 again. For me it solves the problem.
There's one thing you should pay attention to though: the location of that key might be slightly different in modern Windows versions, especially if you're using a 64bit version! For me, the location was not
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Volition -> FreeSpace
but
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Wow6432Node -> Volition -> FreeSpace
That's on XP 64bit. I don't run Vista or 7 so I can't verify their registry structure, but an easy way to check: the "folder" should already exist. You should only be adding keys to the registry, NOT extra "folders". Like the screenshot on the page I linked shows, there should even be some keys already (though I don't have all of them). Long story short, if you can't find the location mentioned, don't create it, search for a slightly different location instead.

Ah, thank you very much RvW for pointing me at that. Sure enough, adding the D3DTextureOrigin key with a value of 1 to the registry fixed the problem. Your first post has been a most helpful one for me.

I bought this game with the Interplay offer and thank you for the suggestion! It really improves the enjoyment of the game, which looks great. I'm a sucker for Space Shooters and there hasn't been a good one in years.

If you want to fully modernize your experience - you can play Freespace 1 through FSport in the Freespace Open Engine. Of course some people want to play the classics only how they played them originally and that's fine too.
