I downloaded what seemed to be Chapter 3 "Foxtail" for Linux, since so far I cannot get the GOG Windows version.

The Chapter 1 & 2 versions worked perfectly well with Puppy Linux 6.0.5 Tahrpup once GLIBC 2.27 was installed, and Puppy Linux 8.

However, this version causes a black screen and the computer must be manually shut off. What is different about it?

I have tried several things, including matching the START.SH and RUN.SH files, with no luck. Changing the color depth has no effect. Chapter 2 runs just fine, but Chapter 3 refuses to run at all and causes that black screen. This is for the entire computer screen; the game never actually works. It seems to have something to do with the new DATA.DCP file.

Again, this was with the GOG standalone version.

You should ask that the ones making the game. Since Puppy Linux 6.0.5 is based on Ubuntu 14.04, which is an officially supported distribution, you might even get help there.

In the absence of a solution, I would like to point out that the Wintermute Engine used for this game was also integrated into ScummVM a while ago and one developer seems to have found a liking to FoxTail.
Though still only one game made with Wintermute Engine is officially supported by ScummVM, most other games work fine as well and he makes sure to add changes for supporting every new FoxTail chapter.
There are so-called nightly builds of the development version that you could try out if you don't want to wait till the next stable version is released or compile it yourself. Maybe the Debian 32-bit x86 build will work, if the dependencies are satisfied. All you need to do then is start ScummVM, click on Add Game and point it to the directory with the game data files and press enter.
