Is there any kind of basic guide? I can't even figure out to cycle through the options in character creation, and anything that would explain even the basic controls would be useful.

That's a common point of confusion, in some of the games you need to use two of the diagonals on the keypad (Home, End, Pg Up, Pg Dn - can't remember which) to navigate some menus.
