One of my favorite of the Gold Box games was actually Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday which basically used a modified sci-fi version of 2nd edition D&D rules (or maybe it was 1st edition), much like the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games used modified 3rd edition. I also never got around to playing the sequel, Matrix Cubed and would love a chance to do so. I guess you could import your party from the first game into the sequel. Countdown also had a port for the Sega Genesis. Improved graphics but dumbed down rules with fewer races, classes etc.
I remember Countdown had a great atmosphere despite the ancient graphics. One mission involved a ship infested with creatures and there was a risk that your party members would become infected and turn on the group.
